PRACTICAL

1. Weight 40gm of specimen M provided, into a 250cm3 measuring cylinder. Add water up to the 150 cm3mark and shake vigorously for about a minute. Allow to stand for 15 minutes.

(i) Draw a labelled diagram to show the layers of the different soil tractions as they appear in the measuring cylinder after the 15 minutes.

(ii) Moisten a small quantity of the specimen and rub between the thumb and index fingers. Record your observations below.

(iii) What do you deduce about the textural class of specimen M?

(iv) What problems does a farmer face with this type of soil?

(v) Suggest 2 ways by which the problems you have mentioned in (iv) above can be solved.
