Bachelor of Science in Nursing – BSc (N)
Programme Specification
The major focus of the Bachelor of Science in nursing programme is to graduate professional nurses capable of delivering safe health care in local, regional and international health care systems. The programme prepares professional general trained nurses with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude required for the delivery of high quality and culturally sensitive services.
The programme starts with foundation of knowledge in the basic sciences, humanities and related professional disciplines in the first year, followed by the body of related nursing knowledge, skill and attitude in subsequent years. These assist the graduates to acquire the critical thinking skills relevant for competent and professional practice.
The curriculum is a four year programme organized in eight semesters each consisting of 20 weeks followed by one year internship in hospitals approved by the ministry of Health and Social welfare. After graduation the midwives will be eligible for registration by the Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Council (TNMC).
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the College of Health Sciences of the University of Dodoma, graduates will have attained the following learning outcomes:
- Utilize therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients, significant support persons and other members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrate clinical decision-making skills that reflect evidence-based nursing care of clients and significant support persons.
- Utilize the nursing process to provide individualized care to clients and significant support persons throughout the lifespan.
- Demonstrate, through nursing practice, belief in the innate value of each individual within his/her unique cultural heritage.
- Develop individualized teaching plans that utilize principles of teaching and learning for clients and significant support persons.
- Collaborate with the client, significant support persons, nursing colleagues and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team to evaluate achievement of positive client outcomes.
- Demonstrate an awareness of nursing research findings and data collection methods as a means of advancing the professional knowledge base of nursing.
- Facilitate the continuity of care for clients within and among a variety of health care settings.
- Assess the client’s health status by completing a health history and performing physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and functional assessment.
- Practice within the ethical, legal, and regulatory.
Bachelor of Science in Midwifery – BSc (MW)
Programme Specification
The Midwifery programme is designed to prepare graduates midwives. The focus of the academic and clinical aspects of this programme is the management of the health care of women and their newborns. While emphasis is placed on care during the childbearing cycle, the curriculum also includes study of women’s health needs throughout the life cycle. Graduates are prepared for full scope midwifery practice, including reproductive anatomy and physiology, family planning, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, primary care and normal newborn care. Intensive clinical experience is provided in each of these areas in a variety of settings, exposing students to diversity in patient populations and practice options. Students learn to provide independent care for healthy women and consultative or collaborative care for women with medical and/or obstetrical complications. Programme Objectives
- To graduate students with a midwifery knowledge base that is current and covers all of the seven international confederations of midwives (ICM) Core Competencies which are adopted by the Tanzania Midwives association (TAMA).
- To assist students in acquiring clinical experience.
- To train students with competence in basic research skills.
- To provide students with midwifery applications for a variety of therapeutic modalities.
- To prepare students to provide individualized midwifery care.
- To teach and promote biodynamic birth principles.
- To use diverse methodologies based on biodynamic educational principals that encourage integration of intellect, senses, intuition, and judgment in learning situations.
- To support students with reaching their midwifery educational and professional goals.
- To encourage an evolving awareness of professional ethics and relationships with peers, preceptors, clients and others as articulated in the Tanzania nurses and midwifery council (TNMC) Statement of Values and Ethics.
- To encourage and support students to be change agents in their communities.
Learning Outcomes
By graduation each student is expected to be able to:
- Utilize theories from midwifery sciences and arts to develop a comprehensive and holistic approach to Midwifery care.
- Manage the care of essentially healthy women during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum period.
- Monitor fetal growth and well-being during the prenatal and in trapartum periods
- Assess the neonate’s adaptation to extra uterine life, and initiate resuscitative measures when appropriate.
- Perform comprehensive neonatal assessment, facilitate the newborn’s integration into the family, and provide guidance related to infant care.
- Manage collaboratively the care of women with obstetrical, gynecologic and/or medical complications and make appropriate referrals (High Risk Pregnancy).
- Utilize legal and ethical principles to guide decision-making in an advanced Midwifery practice role.
- Utilize communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaborative relationships with clients, their families and the health care team.
- Provide primary health care to healthy women from adolescence through post-menopause
- Research and apply research findings to provide quality health care, initiate change, and improve Midwifery practice.
- Critically and accurately assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate health experiences (including wellness and illness) of individuals, families, and communities.
- Apply knowledge of cultural diversity and global perspectives in delivering Midwifery health care.
- Develop an ethical framework to guide one’s Midwifery role and foster one’s leadership and continued growth within the midwifery profession.
- Utilize theories and principles of health care policy, organization and finance to manage fiscal, human, and physical resources.
