University of Namibia Neudamm Campus

University of Namibia Neudamm Campus

Neudamm Campus and Farm extends over 10 187 hectares and is ± 40 kilometres east from Windhoek on the way to Chief Hosea Kutako International Airport and Gobabis.
Agriculture was declared as a priority field of study by the Father of the Nation in the late nineties. The University of Namibia employs academic, technical and administrative staff members to train students in agriculture at The Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources based here since 1996. The Faculty envisages to run the farm eventually as a commercial enterprise to earn valuable income for the University.
Recorded history shows that during 1897, a grazing license holder returned this farm to the Land Council, as he was unable to find water. During the German-Herero War (1904 – 05) the farm was used by the German authorities for grazing for cattle and sheep seized during the war. During this time, Albert Voigts constructed the first large dam in Namibia, hence the name “Neudamm” (New Dam).
An Agricultural School was established in February 1928, with an enrollment of three students (today called Neudamm Experimental Farm or “Old” Neudamm). In 1938 a new school hostel and classroom were built and Gammans Agricultural School outside Windhoek was relocated to Neudamm. As a result of the Second World War the school was closed in 1941.
In 1955 a new College providing for 32 students (with hostels, classrooms, offices and a sport field) was established at a new site (11 km from “Old” Neudamm) close to the road and railway line – the current Neudamm Campus. Today splendid expansions enable our Faculty to currently accommodate 208 Degree students in four hostels on Campus. The Departments of Animal Science, Food Science and Technology, Agricultural Economics and Extension and the newly established Veterinary Medicine are based at Neudamm Campus. It is planned to have a new 60-bed hostel built by the end of 2014 to provide in the growing housing need of future students.
Amongst the multiple tasks within our Faculty, is the issue of income diversification. The following projects and initiatives are taking shape, being improved and are serving as demonstration of agricultural practices to students:

  1. Professional Dairy Production (fresh pasteurized and bottled milk, cream, butter, yogurt, and omaere).
  2. Professional Meat Processing (value is added to meat by processing it in different cuts which is vacuum packed and sold to staff members).
  3. Professional Poultry Production (Layer egg production, grading, and packaging) and the envisaged production of Broiler (meat) Chickens.
  4. Small scale Vegetable and Rice production – 15 ha of irrigated field crops and plastic green houses.
  5. Income generating project at Neudamm Dam – camping, braai and fishing facilities.
  6. Professional Auctions of Livestock – we farm with quality animals – 400 small stock (Dorper, Damara, Karakul and Boer and Kalahari Red Goats); 90 Friesian Dairy Cattle; 550 Beef Cattle (Afrikaner, Simmentaler and Nguni Stud); 100 pigs (swine) and 1 000 layer chickens.
  7. Neudamm Tuck Shop expanded in a Mini Shop.
  8. Neudamm Produce Shop at Main Campus, Pionierspark, Windhoek for selling of surplus produce to staff members.
  9. Professional In Vitro Fertilisation services, Artificial Insemination and Pregnancy Diagnosis to improve herd production.
  10. The future practicing of animal health and wellness to students and community members

Neudamm Campus and Farm certainly live up to the slogan of the FANR – “Training and Research to Feed the Nation”. This Campus is renowned for the fact that most leading farmers and well known Agriculturalists in the economy of Namibia received their agricultural training here.
