University of Namibia Sam Nujoma Campus
The Sam Nujoma Campus is located on a 100 ha site to the north of Henties Bay, on dunes overlooking the ocean and the Omaruru Riverbed. The Campus houses both the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre (SANUMARC) and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS).
The Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre (SANUMARC) is a full-fledged multidisciplinary research Centre of the University of Namibia with the mandate to promote research and development activities in the field of Marine Science and Coastal Resources.
SANUMARC serves Namibia through promoting research and development activities in the field of marine and coastal resources, taking into consideration the unique comparative and competitive advantage of the Benguela cold current ecosystem. Research activities at the Centre are geared towards developing the fisheries and agriculture sectors and complements what is done by the Namibian Ministries of Fisheries and Marine Resources as well as Agriculture, Water and Forestry. The Centre became part of the United Nations University, as an Operating Unit of its Institute for Natural Resources of Africa, based in Accra, Ghana.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS) is an Academic Department within the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the University. The Department offers a four-year degree programme leading to B.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. The Department also offer research based postgraduate programme leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. For over 10 years (2002 to 2012), the Department was generously supported by the Norwegian Government, through provisions of teaching and research facilities, facilitation of visiting Lecturers and research / field trips for both staff and students. The Department has collaboration with University of Tromsø, Rhodes University and the Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi.
