Introduction

With today’s dynamic world, accounting and finance has ceased to be about just keeping financial records. Accounting and finance personnel are required to have comprehensive business skills and competencies which can enable them to be advisors and key players in the development and implementation of strategic business plans. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Finance has been developed to train highly skilled and modern accounting and finance specialists. Specifically it is intended to produce graduates with knowledge, competencies, and skills which will enable businesses and economies under control.The UTAMU’s proposed BSc. Accounting and Finance will offers a unique approach of mixing theory and practice in the teaching and assessment. The programme is blended with the ACCA and Uganda Institute of Bankers professional bankers’ certificate curricula. This is intended to produce unique, shrewd, analytical and widely knowledgeable graduates who will have capacity to solve large complex financial problems and demonstrate a sound understanding of the broader business environment.

Careers

The proposed BSc in Accounting and Finance gives a good foundation for chartered certified accountants and auditors and certified bankers as it is blended with two levels of ACCA and the professional bankers’ certificate of Uganda Institute of Bankers. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance can work in public, private or non-governmental organisations in various positions as accountants, financial planners and Analysts, finance Officers, banking officers, auditors, business Managers and tax analysts. Others can be investment managers, treasury officers, investment analysts and tax consultants.

Objectives of the Program

The Main objective of the BSc in Accounting and Finance degree program is to produce a unique breed of Accounting and Finance personnel for Uganda and the region. Students graduating with a BSc in Accounting and Finance from UTAMU will have the competence and practicability to become comprehensive business advisors and play key roles in the development and implementation of business strategic plans at the Bachelor’s degree level. The specific objectives are:

  1. To provide students with a strong foundation in broad based business education with specialized knowledge in the areas of accounting and finance.
  2. To equip students with a range of skills and competencies necessary to succeed in today’s business environment.

Justification

As the world heals from the global economic crisis, there is need for good accounting and financial management systems to help keep businesses and the wider economies under control. Uganda and the region is still in short supply of professional accountants and financial people. While some universities offer similar programmes, the demand is just overwhelming. Even then, no university that offers similar courses has a good blend of technology and management which UTAMU prides in as core knowledge areas. UTAMU has developed this programme in close consultation with the Institute of Certified Accountants of Uganda and Uganda Institute of bankers. Graduates of this programme will be able to get exemptions once they enroll for professional courses in Uganda.
