VETA Dakawa History

During late 1980s Scandinavian countries decided to contribute to South Africa’s ANC liberation struggle through a large scale investment in socio-development. To this end there generous aid was in the form of erecting from ground up, a min-town complete with residential houses, shopping malls, academic schools and technical institute equiped with morden facilities.

After a meticulous survey of potential sites ANC leaders selected Dakawa as a venue for the new settlement. As fate decreed this sprawling complex was a mere few months old when apartheid ended in South Africa and then refugees were required to return home.

It is from this background that in the spirit of blood-brotherhood ANC gifted their prize complex to the United Republic of Tanzania. On its turn, the government found no other entity suitable to bequeath the technical institute than its own Vocational Education & Training Authority (VETA).

The Authority wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. Within few weeks of the government’s decision, Dakawa VTC was made operational with 87 trainees and four teaching staff availed from Dar es salaam RVTSC through a swift-perhaps unorthodox, but nonetheless sensible relocation.
