Uganda National Bureau of Standards Product Testing
Testing is performing a technical measurement or examination, from which a competent person can draw a conclusion as to whether or not a product or service meets the requirements specified in a standard.
Typical tests involve measurement of dimensions, chemical composition, microbiological purity, strength or other physical characteristics of materials or structures.
Testing also includes assessment of electrical safety and freedom from physical flaws such as cracks, and other defects that may cause failure.
Domestic and imported products are tested for conformity to Standards. These are carried out by the appropriate UNBS laboratories.

UNBS Engineering Materials Laboratory
The Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory carries out various tests on different building and engineering materials to evaluate their compliance to standards. Testing of samples of building and engineering materials is carried out to safeguard the interest of both the consumer and producer; and assure the quality of goods purchased.
Some of the materials and products tested by the laboratory include:
- Cement and lime
- Plain and corrugated iron sheets (galvanised and pre-painted)
- Reinforcement steel bars and structural steel
- Burnt clay bricks, concrete blocks and pre-cast paving blocks
- Manhole covers
- Garden implements (hoes &pangas)
- Wires and wire products
- Sands and aggregates
- Paper and paper products
- Roofing tiles
- Damp proof course
- Product particle size analysis
- Window stays and fasteners
- Door locks
- Foam mattresses
- Hurricane lanterns
- Aluminium saucepans (sufurias)

UNBS Electrical Laboratory
The Electrical Testing Laboratory carries out analysis of electrical products and appliances to assess their compliance with Uganda and International standards. The laboratory carries electrical measurements, their accuracy, uncertainties and traceability to National and International Standards.
The Electrical Laboratory maintains National Standards for electrical units of ac and dc measurements like Voltage, Current, Resistance, Capacitance, Inductance, electrical energy and frequency.
Dissemination of units of measurement is effected through a traceable chain of calibrations done on electrical instruments like multimeters, Voltmeters, Ammeters, kWh-meters (energy meters), frequency meters, Thermocouples, Digital temperature indicators, Oscilloscopes and others.
Electricalproducts analysed in the Electrical Laboratory include:
-
- Electrical wires
- Cables
- Conductors
- Incandescent lamps
- Dry cells; and
- Solar products.

UNBS Chemistry Laboratory
The Chemistry Laboratory carries out chemical analysis of chemical composition of both edible and non-edible products. The laboratory is accredited by South Africa National Accreditation System. The scope of accreditation is calcium, potassium, sodium and metals for water; moisture content for honey; ash content, moisture content, and protein content for cereal foods and cereal flour; and metals for fruit and vegetables.
The Chemistry Laboratory provides services that help prevent contaminated and adulterated foods products from entering the domestic market. The services provided also enhance the quality of the various products manufactured in Uganda, by providing the industries with advice, information and test results on the quality of their products.
