About US:
The Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) was established in 1987 as a collaboration between researchers at Makerere, Columbia and John Hopkins Universities, the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Allergy & Infectious diseases and the International Centre for Excellence Research (ICER). This was as a result of the first identification of clinical AIDS in Rakai district Uganda in 1982 by Drs. Sewankambo and Serwadda. The initiation of the Program, then known as Rakai Project led to a series of clinical studies characterizing the disease and its epidemiology; and also brought the partnership with other colleagues including Professor Maria Wawer and Prof Ronald Gray.
Job Summary: The OVC Facility Case Worker/Manager will support coordination and integrated programming between the clinic and the OVC providers. The OVC Facility Case Worker/Manager position will work closely with the assigned health facility to support OVC services that includes OVC screening, enrolment, treatment adherence counselling, coordination officiality-community referrals, follow-up of OVC medical treatments and leading the linkage to social support services offered by the OVC program. The goal is to ensure that all eligible children at the facility enroll on the OVC program and that they have timely access clinical care and social services. The Facility In-Charge and the RHSP OVC/DREAMS Officer will supervise the Facility Case Worker/Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Screening and Assessment for OVC services
- Work together with Clinical Staff to identify current clients who are eligible for OVC case services
- Support the completion of the screening documentation to determine eligibility for OVC case management services.
- Be responsible for mentorship of facility staff and clients on OVC case management and services procedures
- Link up with OVC CBOs to ensure completion of the OVC vulnerability assessment, initial screening and give feedback to health facilities
- Assist the facility staff in ensuring that documentation of screening for OVC services on the HIV Care/ART card – health education and psychosocial support page is properly filled.
Referrals and Case Coordination
- Attend and participate in Facility OVC-HIV Collaborative Meetings as scheduled
- Work with community-based organizations to ensure complete documentation of all referrals and services received
OVC Service Delivery
- Support documentation of treatment adherence activities and counselling in OVCs files at the facility
- Support adherence activities including follow up on OVC keeping medical appointments, VL bleeding, ART refills IAC sessions, etc.
- In liaison with the facility, organize appropriate DSDM approaches that are favorable to OVC needs/situations
- Coordinate with the facility and CBOs to organize treatment improvement meetings for OVCs including SWITCH meetings, case conferences, etc.
- Assist the Para Social Workers in monitoring the home environment and linking with respective CBOs for early intervention to address risks of HIV and violence in the homes
- Assist in updating client files with OVC program related information at facility level
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Diploma/Equivalent in Social work, community health or a related field
- At least a one (1) year implementing OVC programs – preferably those targeting HIV infected and affected children/families (either voluntary or paid experience)
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to serving vulnerable children while maintaining the do no harm and best interests of the child principles
- Fluency in English speaking and local language of the assigned health facility
