Currently WFP focuses on three priority areas: Saving lives in Emergencies; Building Resilience through Predictable Safety Nets; Improving Nutrition & Mother-and Child Health; and Supporting Small Holder Farmers to Access Markets. WFP has operations in various parts of the Country.

Job Summary: The Logistics Assistant – Transport will provide support to Transport Operations of the World Food Programme (WFP). At this level, the job holder is expected to take responsibility for completion of a range of processes and activities requiring some interpretation of standard guidelines/practices for all assistance modalities for both WFP and logistics common services. The incumbent is also able to recommend a course of action to staff at various levels and may allocate tasks to other support staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Prepare transport allocation plans for submission to the Head of Logistics (HOL) for approval before uplift of cargo.  At the end of the month when uplift is completed, ensure that actual allocationsincluding the earnings are presented to the Country Director (CD) for endorsement.  Any changes to the allocation plan exceeding 10% per transport will be explained in subsequent month.  Land Side Transport Instruction (LTI) issuance and monthly reconciliation to be done in accordance to transport guidelines.
  • On-Land Transport; Work closely with the Program, Pipeline, Procurement, Warehouse and colleagues in Karamoja/South West and West Nile corridors for timely delivery of cargo.  Identify any challenges affecting food deliveries and provide solutions.  If not resolved escalate to the Logistics Officer in charge of Operations. Provide the dispatch versus FRN status on a weekly basis clearly highlighting any bottlenecks.
  • Overland Transport; Work closely with South Sudan/Countries within the region, Mombasa and the recipient Countries for timely commodity allocation, LTI issuance and delivery of cargo.  Follow up with Transporters for truck provision.  Provide the dispatch versus call forward status report on a weekly basis, clearly highlighting any bottlenecks.
  • Conduct pipeline activities on behalf of Logistics unit by monitoring available stocks at Central Delivery Points (CDPs) and Extended Delivery Points (EDPs).  Flag any potential challenges that may affect the deliveries and transport planning to Logistics Officer Operations.  Attend the Pipeline weekly meetings and provide the required input.
  • On a monthly basis, the jobholder will review the performance of transporters based on LTI completion, delivery period, LTI cancellation, transit losses etc. and submit to Logistics Officer Operations.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations UN World Food Programme (WFP) Logistics Assistant – Transport job opportunity should hold a University Degree in either of the following fields: Accounts, Procurement & Logistics, Computer Science, Statistics or any other related field obtained from a recognized Institution; Or a Diploma in Accounts, Procurement & Logistics, Computer Science, Statistics or any other related field obtained from a recognized Institution, coupled with longer relevant working experience;
  • A minimum of four years’ experience in a relevant field gained from a reputable organization;
  • Computer literacy i.e. good working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Packages and other Networking Operating Systems. Working experience with Relational Database Management System, Oracle, & SQL would be an asset.
  • Previous experience using corporate systems to monitor ongoing shipments, pipeline information, insurance claims, and food stock is desired
  • Prior experience analysing data (on commodities, funds, etc.) and drafting reports is an added advantage
  • Previous experience in measuring service providers’ performance against set KPIs.
  • Significant experience in assisting the preparation of contract documentation.
  • Experience in providing technical business support in corporate systems.
  • Excellent command of both written & oral English is essential;

  • Technical Assistance and Coordination: Demonstrates awareness of the importance of technical assistance and coordination with key stakeholders and an ability to carry out logistics activities, respecting individual mandates and programme priorities.
