The aim of DRC is to protect refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) against persecution and to promote durable solutions to the problems of forced migration, on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC works in accordance with the UN Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct for the ICRC and NGOs in Disaster Relief.
Job Summary: The WASH Assistant should have vast knowledge of the contextual area of operations and responsible for the day to day running of water systems including but not limited to water quality, borehole repairs, as well as support to other water systems.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
General Duties:
- Conduct water quality monitoring with staff, the district and advice accordingly on the quality on weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.
- Carry out inspection of boreholes, shallow wells and water pumps and other water supply systems to ensure they are operational.
- Provide support in major repairs and installation of new materials, supplies, machinery and/or equipment.
- Actively contribute to mobilization of beneficiary communities to maintain the established/ rehabilitated and protected water sources.
- Take part in preparing daily/ weekly/ monthly/ quarterly/annual highlights and end of year reports.
Coordination and Representation:
- Represent DRC at WASH Water Quality Monitoring exercises in the field.
- Ensure integration of WASH activities with other DRC sectors.
- Coordinate with WASH counterparts in Rhino camp in the implementation of common funded projects.
- Ensure good representation and reputation of WASH Sector at all levels.
- Actively participate in internal and external coordination meetings.
Project Development:
- Work closely with the WASH Officer, initiate development of project concepts and proposal documents in respect to Water Quality.
- Develop the project’s M&E tools for monitoring Water Supply.
Project Implementation and Reporting:
- Ensure water quality control in accordance to Sphere, UNHCR and the Uganda National standards.
- Prepare WASH daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual reports and timely submission to relevant authorities.
Staff Management:
- Work closely with Community Based Hygiene Promoters and local leaders to ensure proper dissemination of information on water issues to beneficiaries for improvement.
- Uphold DRC’s code of conduct and principles of accountability.
- Develop and agree on own performance objectives, targets and ensure appraisals are conducted on the set targets as required.
- Conduct daily field visits to support other field staff on implementation of WASH.
Logistics /Finance:
- Support the WASH Officers to monitor financial commitments and expenditures against budgets and provide timely feedback on budget follow ups on a daily/weekly/ annual basis especially on water quality monitoring.
- Initiate procurements and make follow up with the line supervisor to ensure their execution.
- Actively contribute to grants management of all WASH projects through management of day to day project expenditures.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) WASH Assistant job placement must hold a Diploma in Environment Health Science, Water Engineering or WaSH related course from recognized institution. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree is an added advantage.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in implementing WaSH project
- Extensive knowledge of WaSH national and international standards.
- Strong competence in English literacy
- Proven skills in computer programs (Word, Excel; minimum)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent skills in report writing and meeting dead lines
- Demonstrated ability to work in war conflict areas
- Ability to build effective working relations with the other team members and other stakeholders.
- Show commitment to accountable practices.
- Extensive knowledge of working in challenging environments.
- Proven ability to manage large varied workloads and deal constructively with stress and periods with long hours.
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work with limited supervision
