Brick by Brick Uganda’s mission is to create partnerships that improve education, health, and economic opportunity in the Rakai and Kyotera Districts of Uganda. Since 2003, Brick by Brick has been working directly with rural communities and local government to rebuild schools and identify critical needs in health, water, and sanitation. It operates under a five-step partnership model of identification of needs, generation of ideas with Ugandan partners and the community, direct partnership to pilot innovation, measurement of results, and expansion.
Job Summary: The Grant Writing Officer will be based in Kalisizo, Kyotera District and support the Executive Director and Program Coordinators. The Officer will be primarily responsible for developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations and will persuasively communicate BBBU’s mission and programs to potential funders. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Officer will assemble and submit grant requests, establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts, conduct prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines. The Officer will be responsible for coordinating the grant application process including research, writing, management of proposals, and maintaining a donor database.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Formulate an annual grants strategy
- Develop and maintain a proposal calendar
- Maintain calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines, and reports
- Carry out research to identify, cultivate and solicit new grant opportunities
- Conduct research and collect data to support grant applications
- Collect and organize necessary supporting information (budgets, letters, etc) for all grant application, collaborating with department managers
- Write and submit grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations, persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and the impact of its programs
- Establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts and program officers
- Follow up on progress of submitted proposals
- Ensure prompt acknowledgement of foundation gifts
- Provide writing support for major donor and individual contribution letters and acknowledgements
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Global Health Corps Grant Writing Officer career placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree*
- Preferred: Master’s degree
- At least two years of experience in research or grant writing, ideally in a nonprofit context*
- Excellent writing skills, preferably evidenced by past successful grant proposals or research reports*
- Familiarity with Raisers Edge or another CRM database*
- Strong research skills, with experience performing literature reviews with Endnote or similar software*
- Demonstrated project management ability to write successful grant proposals; detail-oriented, organized, deadline-driven
- Experience using online databases like Guidestar or the Foundation Center and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information
- Experience creating budgets, especially for use proposals and grants
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Motivated and analytical self-starter with the ability to work independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment
- A high level of computer literacy, including high proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
