About US:

Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) is a non-governmental organization that has worked for now 15 years to uphold and secure the rights of the owners and users of land, especially when held under customary tenure. LEMU does this by documenting customary land rights and by partnering with relevant actors to challenge the abuse of otherwise progressive land customs, to protect and uphold customary land rights of families, individuals and communities. It does so in order to promote and preserve social harmony, and to prevent and resolve land conflicts.

Job Summary:  The purpose for which the Executive Director’s ED) job is defined principally in relation to overall authority and responsibility of LEMU. The appointment as ED is designed to execute management responsibilities and to help ensure that specific managerial functions are performed properly. In broad terms, the ED is the most senior manager of LEMU; He or she manages relationships with the Board, staff and other stakeholders, manages development of programmes and development programmes of LEMU; will lead on a policy area and development teams. The responsibilities demand that the ED may be required to travel widely, frequently, and at personal discomfort and sometimes under insecure conditions. The ED’s responsibilities include management of:

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Finance and Logistics (approval, quality, policy implementation)
  • Programme (M and E, impact assessment, Strategic plan implementation and reviews, quality control, policy advocacy and influencing, implementing communication strategy)
  • Human Resource
  • Donor relations
  • Governance (board)
  • Sustainability of LEMU (institutional learning, audits)
  • Representation of LEMU in and outside Uganda.
  • Resource mobilization

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Master’s Degree
  • Five years of experience and knowledge of customary land systems in Uganda and Land Act and Policy of the Government of Uganda. Three (3) years’ experience in development and management is also critical
  • Understanding of safeguarding and gender values and Principles.
  • Strong background in resource mobilization
  • Good rapport with stakeholders including Governments and Donors
  • Proven and Developed computer skills in work processing and spreadsheets. Integrity, honesty
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of management: staff, and/or programs and policy work.
  • Ability to be part of a team, and able to build teams, but also to provide leadership and to delegate.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Strong project cycle skills assessment, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic planning skills.
  • Strong commitment to social justice, promoting gender awareness and equality
  • Knowledge and understanding of Uganda economic, social and political.
  • Good communicator both written and oral. A good listener
  • Financial and numeracy skills, proven ability to manage budgets. Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse Organization
  • Ability and willingness to travel away from home and in difficult circumstances.

Desirable

  • Experience of an NGO.
  • Grassroots/community experience
  • Good community participation skills
  • PRA and other Methodologies
  • Driving license.
