Job Summary: The Deputy Principal – Student Affairs and Boarding to work in Rwanda
Has overall responsibility for student affairs and boarding, including welfare and the overall structuring of the non-academic programme. Reports to the Principal as a member of the Senior Management Team. Collaborates for senior management purposes on an equal basis with the other Deputy Heads
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- To implement the health, hygiene, safety and welfare policies of the school and make recommendations for changes/developments in these policies
- To ensure that the health and hygiene standards meet or exceed the norms required by the Ministry of Education and the school itself
- To ensure the smooth running of the dining hall operations and monitor the quality of the catering services
- To make a draft plan and budget annually of the students’ living and welfare expenditures
- To maintain a living environment that exposes the students to the benefits of a firm and humane disciplinary framework and is conducive to a healthy life-style
- To create the student out-of-class routines, including timings compatible with those proposed for classes and preps by the D-H of Academics
- To make the hostel rules and timetables and implement them through the Warden and the Matron
- To oversee the sick-bay operations and maintain liaison with the Nurse and the parents on student health cases
Welfare staff
- To provide leadership of the welfare services to students
- To call welfare staff meetings on a regular basis to give out notices and clarifications and hear the members’ points of view on welfare and professional issues
- To assist the Principal in the appointment, promotion and termination of welfare and assistant hostel staff.
- To review from time to time the criteria for the appointment of welfare staff
- To monitor welfare staff and formally evaluate them once a term at least
- To recommend teaching staff for hostel responsibilities as per needs
- To praise, counsel and support welfare staff as necessary, and give regular feedback on their performance
Students
- To make, implement and update the boy and girl boarding lists
- To maintain student records as per the Policy and Procedures on personnel records
- To ensure that appropriate student disciplinary regulations and systems are in place and fully implemented
- To take appropriate disciplinary or pastoral action, in collaboration with the colleagues, on individuals or groups whose behaviour, morale or social integration gives cause for concern; such action must include briefing of fellow senior managers and the parents.
- To alert the Principal to any crucial student cases that may arise
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and any related field;
- A minimum of four to five years of working experience in related field
- High-level communication skills;
- Stakeholder management skills;
- Proven ability to monitoring;
- Conflict resolution;
- Child care skills, counselling
- Proficiency in English;
- Communication and mentoring skills;
- Computer literacy skills
- First aid and EHS skills
- Time management and planning skills.
