About US:

The British High Commission is the diplomatic liaison office that aims to develop and maintain close bilateral relations with Uganda, in accordance with British government policies. The British High Commission is responsible for the political relationship between the UK and Uganda, and we provide advice and guidance on political and governance issues. BHC provides assistance and documentary services to British nationals in Uganda. The UK Trade and Investment Section provides assistance to both British and Ugandan businesses.

Job Summary:  The Electrician and Estates Officer will serve as the Electrician providing electrical services to the British High Commission office building, the Official Residence, and 29 residences ensuring all electrical installations are in compliance with UK building standards.  In addition, the Electrician will provide support to the rest of the Artisan team in the form of deliveries, record keeping and supervision of contractors. Support Estates Team with administrative tasks and duties as required. Improving procedures, carrying out health & safety checks and completing critical reports required for the PCA.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Provision of Electrical Services:

  • Undertake electrical work across the Estate. Monitor utility use and report abnormal use of electricity.
  • Carry out inspections of electrical installations as requested and provide a report on findings making recommendations to resolve the problems.
  • Complete electrical work requests from assignment of task to completion ensuring that work is carried out to a high standard within the agreed period as set out in the Corporate Services Charter.  Ensure all Works Request are signed off at the end of the task confirming the customer is satisfied with the works carried out.
  • Carry out planned yearly preventative maintenance works on electrical installations.
  • Carry out weekly battery and radiator checks on the BHC office stand by generator.
  • Be compliant with the Health and Safety guidance to ensure tools and equipment used to carry out all the electrical work are well maintained and are in a good condition.  Report any defects immediately to Maintenance Manager and ensure tools are kept locked away after use.
  • Provide Supervision of technical and non-technical contractor’s works as requested.
  • Provide technical input and support prior to and during official events

Estates Administration:

  • Manage the electrical stores, and keep up to date records from all deliveries and issuances.  Participate in stores and asset inventory checks as requested.
  • Supporting the Estates Officer and Estates Manager to record all relevant information relating to utility payments for UMEME and NW&SC.
  • Prepare maintenance schedules for preventative maintenance one week prior for works on A/Cs, generator service and electrical safety; liaising with UK Based staff and contractors.
  • Complete health and Safety checks and other reports required for the PCA.
  • Provide back up to the store keeper and leave cover to team members as appropriate

Additional Works:

  • Carry out lawn mower checks and basic repairs. Make recommendations to rectify the problems.
  • Provide DSTV installation support.
  • Provide technical repairs on telephone handsets and prompt feedback on the situation and the way forward.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the British High Commission (BHC) Electrician and Estates Officer job should hold a Diploma and or Post- Secondary Training in Electricals.
