The objective of the program in Uganda is to improve livelihoods of the most vulnerable population in rural areas through interventions that increase their Food and Nutrition Security, improve sustainable access to WASH services and support the employability of the youth through vocational and life skills training. In Uganda, Welthungerhilfe currently operates in the districts of Arua, Yumbe, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Napak, Amudat, Fortportal, Katakwi, Amuria, Mukono, Wakiso and country office in Kampala.
About Project:
Welthungerhilfe is currently implementing the project: Capacity Building of local WASH structures and Improving Sanitation and Hygiene in Bidibidi Yumbe district.
Job Summary: The WASH Engineer will implement the WASH Infrastructure interventions within Welthungerhilfe’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene project in Yumbe, Bidibidi Refugee settlement, with the goal to improve the public health of the target population.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assess health risks, water and sanitation needs, available resources and the capacity of the existing systems for the settlement.
- Identify suitable water sources, confirm quality and quantity of water available and obtain relevant government approvals.
- Consult with relevant stakeholders about access, design and management of water systems and sanitation facilities as well as hygiene promotion needs.
- Design and implement sanitation systems for household, institutions and other community facilities, including drainage and vector control in close coordination with relevant authorities.
- Assess and deliver capacity building needs of the local WASH structures.
- Assess conditions and set up maintenance systems, train staff and arrange repairs of tanks, pumps, generators, pipe networks, drainage systems and water quality testing equipment.
- Prepare technical drawings, BoQ, specifications for water and sanitation infrastructure.
- Develop, negotiate and supervise contracts with service providers (including preparation of tender documentations and evaluating capacity and quality of the contractors).
- Liaise with other agencies / government bodies / donors to ensure coordination and works suitability.
- Prepare and submit reports weekly, monthly and when deem necessary by the supervisor.
- Participate in joint monitoring and coordination meetings
Note: – The role of WASH Engineer cannot be limited to the specific duties and tasks detailed herein. The success of the WHH humanitarian mission is the highest priority and all issues which arise must be addressed accordingly. Therefore, she/he will be required to manage all unforeseen issues and circumstances and remain flexible to perform any other duties, as and when required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a University degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant field(s) and at least 3 years of practical hands – on experience in water treatment and supply, sanitation, public health with minimum of 2 years’ experience in emergency response.
- Good command of English and knowledge of local language is desirable.
- Able to work in difficult conditions, independently and in a team.
- Strong cross-cultural communication and resilience skills are very important.
- Experience in supervising and mentoring of other staffs.
- Design software for water supply scheme.
- Excellent computer skills in MS Word, Excel, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Valid riding permit.
Work conditions: The position is based in Yumbe but with travel to Welthungerhilfe country office in Kampala and other project locations. The work start date is 10th February 2020.
Duration: Six months with possibility of extension depending on the availability of funding.
