About US:

Caritas Switzerland and its partners AFARD, Advance Afrika, and GWED-G are about to implement the Action for Livelihood Enhancement in Northern Uganda (ALENU) in the districts of Zombo, Nebbi, Pakwach, Amuru, Omoro and Agago.

The project is part of the Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU), a Government of Uganda programme supported by the European Union (EU) under the 11th EDF. The purpose of ALENU is,” To consolidate stability in Northern Uganda, eradicate poverty and undernutrition and strengthen the foundations for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development” and its specific objective is, “To increase food security, improve maternal and child nutrition, and enhance household incomes through support to diversified food production and commercial agriculture and through improving household resilience (notably to climate change) and women empowerment.”

Job Summary:   The Business Development Service Officer officer will facilitate interactions with market players, support farmer groups to strengthen their ability to secure profitable market opportunities and improved access to financial services. S/he will conduct training, monitoring and mentorship of farmer groups.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Support, train and coach farmers groups on market standards to improve on agronomic practices
  • Develop and maintain a database of key market actors and operators that can be used to strengthen and expandmarkets and market opportunities for theproject selected commodities
  • Support and facilitate linkages between smallholder farmers, agro-processors, financial services and market operators to ensure farmer groups access business development services
  • Train and support farmer groups on how to collect, analyse, and use agricultural market information
  • Organise farmer markets at sub county level to tap into local market opportunities
  • Facilitate learning visits for farmers to learn from best practices of model farms and private sector actors
  • Support farmer groups by working closely with the project technical service contractors and selected agro-processors in the value chain development/ value addition for the project’s commodities
  • Participate in the annual Sales and Marketing audit for the project’s commodities
  • Organise and conduct multi-stakeholder platform and annual cross-sector dialogues
  • Support the establishment of market linkages between relevant government agencies, input suppliers, agro-processors, financial institutions and other market actors to ensure effective partnerships and collaborations on agri-business and investment opportunities
  • Continuously monitor market trends and other analyses of the market system to support decision making
  • Participate and contribute to the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) framework of the project specifically to agribusiness and marketing
  • Participate in the partner coordination meetings at the sub county and district level
  • Ensure timely quality accountability and reporting (monthly, quarterly, annual and final reporting)
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a diploma/degree in Business Management or Agriculture Marketing or other related Social Science
  • At least two years’ work experience in business development service or agricultural extension and familiarity with key methods such as M4P/Market System Development
  • Technical skills in program planning, implementation and reporting
  • Fluency in English and a relevant local (Alur, Jonamor Acholi) language
  • Excellent communication / writing skills and competence in adult learning and education
  • Experience working on complex donor projects
  • Able to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Able and willing to frequently travel and stay at the field
  • Basic computer skills i.e. MS Office
  • A valid motorcycle riding permit is a must
