Job Title:    IGA Social Worker

Duty Station:  All over Uganda, Uganda

About US:

Dwelling Places (DP) is a registered Christian Non-Governmental Organization which specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation, reconciliation, resettlement and follow-up of children living on the streets. The overall objective of DP is to have a society where every child has a chest to rest their head on and a place to call home.

Job Summary:  The IGA Social Worker will be supporting implementation of the income generating activities in line with donor requirements and Dwelling Places Strategy. The incumbent will provide ongoing support for the beneficiaries (Children, Youth and their Families) to enable sustainable resettlement and successful exit

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

IGA and Mentorship responsibilities

  • Facilitate and oversee economic strengthening activities at the specific centres including IGAs, VSLAs and corresponding monthly progress reports.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly individual work plans of the IGA team and submit to the manager for approval and implementation.
  • Work closely with Field officers in tracking of all the Dwelling Places beneficiaires ascertaining status reports on individual child progress.
  • Enhance school and other institutional partnership to enable girls’ progression and attendance.
  • Participate in training involving parents and children in the corresponding Centres.
  • Profile and document success stories as obtained from the project beneficiaries.
  • Work with VSLA leadership in planning for the categories of girls and families that may include teenage mothers, girls in vocational training and those in mainstream schooling.
  • Provision of emotional, social and moral support to girls and families so that they can understand the benefit of education.
  • Work with girls and families to identify and address the particular background issues that are causing the girls to drop out of school.
  • Encourage families to set goals for their children’s education and ensure that families offer the right career guidance and counselling for girls.
  • Help families to plan more carefully with their households income budgets, join village saving and loan schemes as a strategy for meeting the needs of their households.
  • Work with the leadership of the VSLA to link the group to the sub county.
  • Submit monthly reports to contact persons.
  • Work closely with Field officers in tracking of the 9890 project beneficiaries ascertaining status reports on individual child progress.

  • Ensuring child protection strengthening at the centre, community and family levels.
  • Enhance school and other institutional partnership to enable children’s progression and attendance.
  • Participate in training involving parents and children in the corresponding Centres.
  • Profile and document success stories as obtained from the project beneficiaries.
  • Work with VSLA leadership in planning for the categories of girls that include teenage mothers, vocational girls and those in mainstream schooling.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the line manager

Related Responsibilities

  • Read the files of the referred children to familiarize yourself with their cases.
  • Accompany the children during resettlement to be introduced to the family as a social worker in charge of ongoing support.
  • Plan and budget for the children and their families in ongoing support
  • Develop a follow up schedule for the FEP children youth and their families and conduct quarterly visits to monitor their welfare and progress.
  • Fill the child index forms (CSI) for all the children followed up
  • Sensitize and encourage parents to take the lead in following up their children’s progress in school, attending class & visitation days, taking children and picking them from school
  • Prepare monthly requisition for the FEP activities in line with the approved budget
  • Remind parents to bring their children to Dwelling Places offices for letter writing, collecting their gifts every school holiday and bringing their school reports
  • Collect circulars from parents and ensure they are submitted to the finance office in a timely manner.
  • Organize and conduct child protection training for the children, youth and parents and involve local leaders
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of the annual children and youth camps
  • Participate in the bi-annual beneficiary analysis to determine the level of support for the children and families in FEP
  • Recommend parents and children able to support themselves for exit and ensure sustainable exits
  • Review the family support plans and update the children’s files weekly
  • Write and submit weekly progress reports to the Rebuild Program Manager by the end of business Friday.
  • Monitor your budget and account for all funds received within the stipulated time in the finance manual.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling for the children and families on the ongoing support.
  • Liaise with the CSP officer to ensure all children have sponsors in their areas of need
  • Supervise the volunteers assigned to FEP and ensure efficiency and effectiveness in performance
  • Plan and conduct mentorship for the children and families in FEP

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Degree in Social Work or Social Sciences or a related field
  • Two years of work experience preferably in an NGO setting
  • Good interpersonal skills; able to relate to all levels of management and staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to manage files and filing systems
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, good judgment & strong focus
  • Born again Christian
