About USAID Project:
GTI Uganda with anticipated funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Uganda Sanitation for Health Activity (USHA) is soon rolling out a Sanitation for Hygiene project using the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) methodology in Paicho Sub County in Gulu District. The project aims at eliminating the practice of open defecation in the 100 targeted communities and achievement of WASH friendliness in 5 Primary Schools Paicho Sub County in Gulu District by 2024-2025.The objectives of the Sanitation for Health project is to increase the number of people accessing basic latrines in 100 villages, increase number of people practicing safe hygiene behaviors especially hand washing with soap and to improve school WASH friendly practices for 5 primary schools in Paicho Sub-county.
Job Summary: The Wash Assistant-Wash Friendly School will attend PTA meetings and health parades, form orient and train school health clubs, conduct meetings and provide technical support to School health club patron, senior woman and male teacher, Carry our operation and maintenance of WASH facilities in schools. Training upper primary pupils on menstrual hygiene management, support the WASH coordinator in planning the SWIPs workshop, participating in WASH school competitions
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the selected primary schools to develop their School WASH Improvement plan (SWIPS) for each school
- Strengthening School Management Committees to successfully acquire or operate and maintain school WASH infrastructure.
- Organise WASH in school trainings for pupils of the upper primary in menstrual hygiene, the school health clubs to prepare them for sanitation for health activities, school administration, teachers and management committees on proper sanitation and hygiene needs assessment and practices
- Sensitize parents on proper sanitation and hygiene practices and importance of proper WASH facilities and practices both in schools and households during PTA (Parents Teacher’s Association meetings)
- Support School Health Clubs (SHC) in planning and implementation sanitation and hygiene promotion activities.
- Support school WASH positive behaviour change by providing technical assistance and BCC materials to teachers in WASH behaviour promotion among pupils and the School Health Clubs.
- Participate in training school administrators, teachers and school health clubs in the Child Hygiene and Sanitation Training (CHAST) approach and oversee its implementation.
- Liaise with school administrators and government officials to promote good WASH practices in schools.
- Disseminate positive WASH behaviour promotional materials in all schools through SHCs and teachers
- Monitor and carry out support supervision on the operation and maintenance of WASH facilities in schools ie water sources, latrines, and hand washing facilities.
- Track the progress of school intervention in accordance with sanitation for health intervention performance plan
- Develop and submit monthly and quarterly reports, progress reports on activities to meet organization reporting needs.
- Any other duties assigned
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Diploma/Bachelors or its equivalent in public health, social sciences, Environmental Health, Community Development and diploma or higher degree in listed Degree Fields.
- One to three years of experience in implementation of sanitation and hygiene interventions using Community Total Lead Sanitation (CLTS) and/ or Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Methodology (PHAST) tools.)
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal and effective communication skills
- Knowledge of computer applications, MS Office and Excel.
- Excellent training, mentoring and coaching skills
- Community mobilization and facilitation skills
- Flexible, proactive, results-oriented with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as part of a larger team.
- Fluent in English and Luo
- Possesses a valid riding permit and knowledge of road rules.
