Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit biomedical research Organization, whose mission is to mitigate disease threats through quality research, health care and disease surveillance. MUWRP was established in 2002 by a Memorandum of Agreement between The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, lnc. (HJF) and Makerere University (Mak) to undertake medical research to test HIV vaccines. Over the years, MUWRP’s portfolio has progressively expanded to include vaccine research for Ebola and Marburg viruses, surveillance of influenza and influenza- like viruses and other emerging infections in humans and animals; also epidemiological, basic and implementation research in HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in the Districts of Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technician will efficiently handle the existing and upcoming workload and support the lab to run efficiently as a Lab Hub, while implementing laboratory quality management systems.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in routine testing of laboratory samples
- Support and participate in the implementation of Mukono Lab hub operations
- Support and actively participate in the implementation of laboratory quality management systems and the quality improvement activities towards accreditation
- Participate operations and process samples from Basic program evaluations as they may be formulated.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The prospective employee should hold a Diploma in laboratory technology from a recognized institution.
- Two years of experience in clinical or research lab, implementing quality management systems.
- Computer literacy is a prerequisite.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated.
- Must be registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) with a current practicing license.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- Ability to professionally communicate in writing, verbally or other means deemed appropriate.
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.
- Use of computers including word processing and Internet.
- Fluency in verbal and written English and Luganda.
- Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate.
- The ability to frequently travel between MUWRP sites in Uganda.
