Job Overview:
As a Forest Monitoring and Policy Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting Uganda’s efforts to align its National Forest Monitoring System with international standards, including the EU Deforestation Regulations and the UK’s Forest Risk Commodities regime. This position involves close collaboration with the FAO Uganda team, the Forestry Officer MRV, and the National Forest Monitoring and REDD+ Teams, focusing on enhancing policy coherence and facilitating technical assistance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) initiatives, collaborating with FAO/NFO and local teams.
- Manage and coordinate the GIS-MRV team in Uganda.
- Identify and document global carbon market opportunities for financing.
- Engage with stakeholders to explore potential carbon financing avenues for Uganda.
- Analyze public forestry expenditure in collaboration with policy teams, contributing to policy coherence.
- Enhance the effectiveness of HQ-based team efforts in Uganda, fostering strong relationships with National Forest Authorities, relevant ministries, and MRV stakeholders.
- Support data collection and interviews, contributing to gap assessments and policy document drafting.
- Facilitate workshops to disseminate the results and insights of MRV and REDD+ initiatives.
- Proactively address emerging MRV issues, aligning with the Ugandan government’s priorities.
- Perform additional tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- University degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in forest resources monitoring, assessment, or management.
- Proficiency in planning, monitoring, and reporting within the forestry sector.
- Familiarity with National Forest Monitoring Systems and Uganda’s REDD+ framework.
- Independent work style with strong initiative.
- Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ugandan nationality is required.
