The Johns Hopkins University/Center for Communication Programs (CCP) is a pioneer in the field of strategic, research based communication for behavior change and health promotion that has helped transform the theory and practice of public health. The Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) is working with the Uganda Ministry of Health and partners involved in Schistosomiasis prevention and control to design and implement a mass mediacampaign promoting prevention.
Job Summary: The Consultant will support the Schistosomiasis Prevention Communication Campaign. He / she will manage activities in Uganda in close collaboration with Ministry of Health and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) stakeholders to organize community/school outreaches, call-in radio programming, and radio spot broadcasts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health NTD Division, other NTD stakeholders and an advertising agencycontracted by CCP, organize and coordinate training/orientation sessions for radio talk show hosts/presenters and Schistosomiasis focal persons based in districts where Schistosomiasis is endemic;
- Schedule and ensure that trained Schistosomiasis focal persons with appropriate local language skills participate in radio call-in talk shows, following a program outline for key content each week;
- Schedule and ensure that trained Schistosomiasis focal persons with appropriate local language skills participate in school and community outreach visits and follow discussion guides provided by CCP and MOH during those visit;
- Oversee pretesting of radio and print materials for the Schistosomiasis Prevention Communication Campaign, and ensure that recommendations for revisions are communicated to theadvertising agency;
- Keenly monitor reports from media monitoring firm and advertising agency regarding broadcast of radio programs and spots for the Schistosomiasis Prevention Communication Campaign, and ensure that radio stations broadcast programs and spots according to schedule;
- Keep record of and preparemonitoring reports of training/orientation sessions, radio call-in programs, community/school outreaches;
- Organize meetings with the Ministry of Health, School of Public Health, and other stakeholders to share campaign progress and outputs;
- Assist with other activities related to the campaign.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must be a Ugandan resident with a degree in social science, health, communication, or related field;
- A minimum of five years’ experience in health communication.
- Fluent in written and spoken English and at least one other Ugandan language;
- Excellent writing skills.
- Knowledge of Schistosomiasis, water, hygiene and sanitation is an added advantage.
