Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish the strategic direction, design and implement policies and procedures for the overall legal function of the University;
- Lead the defense and prosecution of all University legal actions;
- Advise the University Council on all legal and other matters;
- Provide legal expertise to University departments;
- Provide leadership and manage staff and resources in the Unit /Division;
- Plan and direct all aspects of the University’s legal affairs and protect its legal rights;
- Review and advise management on legal implications of internal policies and procedures;
- Review and draft contracts and agreements in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements;
- Liaise with External Lawyers on all cases that are referred to the Directorate for action;
- Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for the Legal Unit to Management and University Council;
- Interpret laws, rules, regulations and documents for the University and Council.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the Makerere University Director Legal Affairs job placement must hold an Honors Bachelor of Laws Degree from a recognized Institution;
- A Diploma in Legal Practice;
- An Advocate of the High Court of Uganda with a valid Practicing Certificate;
- A Master of Laws Degree from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;
- Managerial experience will be an added advantage.
- Applicants should have at least five (5) years’ experience of Legal Practice.
- Leadership and supervisory skills;
- Ability to build, lead, and work with teams;
- Computer literacy;
- Interpersonal & communication skills;
- Quick judgment and decision making;
- Ability to initiate change.
