About the Project:
Mercy Corps has been operating in Uganda since 2006 and works to catalyze change through the Ugandan private sector, civil society and government to create resilient, economically inclusive, healthy, and secure communities. Our work focuses on building resilience and enabling economic growth, improving opportunities to attain better health and nutrition, improving governance and conflict management, and bridging humanitarian response with longer term development outcomes. We implement programs in Acholi, Karamoja and West Nile Sub-regions, as well as eastern Uganda and the greater Kampala area with funding from USAID, Sida, US State Department, SDC, DFID as well as other private donations.
The USAID’s Securing Peace and Promoting Prosperity in Karamoja (EKISIL) is a two year Conflict Management and Mitigation Project that will apply a people-to-people peace building approach to enhance the capacity of institutional structures to address underlying social, economic, ecological, and governance issues at risk of fueling conflict in Karamoja Sub-region. The project will be implemented in Kaabong, Kotido, Abim, and Moroto.
Job Summary: The driver will provide safe driving services for MC program and support staff in the described AOR (Area of Responsibility). The driver will adhere to all traffic and MC safety rules and follow the transport guidelines required by the MC transport department.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Drive and manage the assigned vehicle skillfully and provide transportation service to staff;
- Drive the assigned vehicle with at most care and with full respect to the traffic rules and regulations as well as Mercy Corps Uganda vehicle use guideline;
- Ensure that the assigned vehicle meets all legal requirements at any time;
- Keep the assigned vehicle clean and tidy;
- Maintain up to date records of vehicle log sheet for each and every movement of the vehicle;
- Undertake a strict follow up that the assigned vehicle is periodically repaired, technically in good condition and can provide the intended transportation service;
- Undertake minor maintenance/service as deemed as necessary.
- Conduct himself/herself both professionally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and not jeopardize its humanitarian mission;
- Ensure that all necessary measures are taken to provide MC employees with a safe working environment as detailed in existing guidelines;
- Do any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must have a Valid Drivers Ugandan License; Class DL
- Uganda Advanced Level Certificate of Education qualification
- Minimum of 3 years of experience driving 4WD cars;
- Must know and obey to all safety and traffic rules of the Uganda;
- Knowledge of driving in less secure and harsh environment;
- Effective communication both orally and writing in English;
- Understanding and following safety procedures;
- Must speak the local language
- Positive attitude, vigilance, honesty, confidentiality, willingness to work long hours and initiative
