About US:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
About the Study:
The Mental Health Section of the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is undertaking a study to develop and evaluate at clinical trial a model for the integration of depression management in adult HIV care in Uganda. As part of this study, an economic evaluation will be undertaken alongside the trial to estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of the HIV+D intervention in three districts in Uganda from a societal perspective. The economic evaluation will be led by Professor Anna Vassall and Dr Yoko Laurence of the LSHTM. The objectives of the costing component of the economic evaluation are:
- To compare the provider costs of routine HIV care and HIV+D for people with depression
- To assess the costs incurred by people in HIV care with depression
- To estimate productivity losses due to depression while in HIV care
Job Summary: The jobholder will be tasked with the collection of economic data on the development and delivery of the Enhanced Usual Care (EUC) and Collaborative Stepped Care (CSC) interventions, as well as assisting in the collection of patient household consumption data, out-of-pocket costs and household productivity losses during the period of HIV and depression care in the trial.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect data on quantity and cost of the resources required for people in HIV care with depression in a sample of the 40 EUC and CSC facilities included in the trial
- Together with the Health Economist, pilot the questionnaire
- Administer the tested questionnaire to patients and possibly their caregivers in the trial at baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months
- Enter, manage and store the collected economic costing data
- Support the project implementation team as guided by the health economist and project leader
- Subject to demonstrated performance and interest, the RA shall be invited for the last year of the data collection to generate the initial descriptive analysis from the data collected.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Medical Research Council (MRC) UK / UVRI) Health Economics Research Assistant job must hold a Diploma level qualification in economics or accounting with knowledge of the medical field or a diploma level health-related qualification with knowledge of economics or accounting.
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree is an added advantage.
- Having a degree or diploma attained should have a large quantitative component e.g. economics, mathematics, statistic, epidemiology, accounting among others will be an added advantage.
- At least one year of experience working in medical research
- Experience working on economic costing and evaluation projects and with health facilities is an added advantage
- Working knowledge of data management or analysis software like Access, STATA among others
