Opportunity Bank Uganda Ltd (OBUL) is currently looking for an Assistant Accountant to join their team in Kampala, Uganda. This role reports to the Finance Manager and is a great opportunity for individuals looking to develop a career in the finance and banking sector.

Job Summary: The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for various accounting tasks, including preparing and inputting journal entries, processing transactions, managing petty cash, handling branch replenishments, processing payments, generating reports, and maintaining the fixed asset register. This position requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of financial processes and compliance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparing timely bank reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Processing cheques and electronic payments.
  • Efficiently managing branch replenishments and cash balances.
  • Clearing branch accountabilities in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring compliance with tax filings and other regulatory requirements.
  • Acting as an alternate to the Management Accountant when needed.
  • Managing petty cash and reconciling allocated balance sheet accounts.
  • Filing all supporting documents and maintaining the fixed asset register.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • A University Degree in a business-related subject.
  • Good grades in mathematics and English at O-Level.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of the microfinance and banking industry, including banking compliance regulations.
  • Analytical skills, with an ability to understand financial numbers and results.
  • Good interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
  • Intermediate mathematical and numeric skills.
  • Ability to plan and monitor one’s own work plan.
