The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit HIV research program that was established in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military Medicine Inc. of USA (HJF). The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop, evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate disease threats of public health importance to Uganda.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will fully participate in the running of samples at Laboratory Hub, from the host facility and other lower level MUWRP supported ART clinics under the hub system. The incumbent has to ensure that quality assurance procedures are followed in the generation of laboratory results and that all results from sample runs are accurately processed and released back to the respective clinics in a timely manner. He/she is responsible for supporting the establishment of an effective and sustainable quality management system to ensure reliability of results generated by the laboratory.
The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining proficiency in current laboratory procedures such as general QA/QC, haematology, serum chemistry, CD4 counts, syphilis RPR, TB microscopy, Malaria microscopy, HIV rapid testing, Urinalysis, Urine pregnancy, HBsAg and other routine lab diagnostic tests. In addition, he/she is expected to perform laboratory safety duties and learn new laboratory techniques as they come into the laboratory.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Proficiently conduct: Automated hematology as established by the SOP for this assay, FACSCount CD4 counts as established by the SOPs for this assay, serum chemistry evaluation using the Roche Cobas c111 as established by the SOP for this assay, HIV rapid tests and Syphilis RPR and TPPA as per the SOPs.
- Proficiently perform other routine diagnostic tests, including TB microscopy, malaria microscopy, urinalysis, Urine pregnancy, HBsAg, e.t.c as per their SOPs
- Proficiently run the Genexpert machine used in the diagnosis of MTB and Rifampicin resistance as per established SOPs
- Support the running of research samples as per the study protocol
- Perform routine and periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure their continued functionality as established by SOPs and QA/QC guidelines.
- Implement internal and external quality assurance procedures in Kawolo lab Hub and affiliated lower health facility labs and ensure that IQC and EQA results are properly utilized for continued quality improvement of laboratory services.
- Participate in the generation, review and maintenance of laboratory documents and records including internal laboratory quality and safety manuals, SOPs, quality control records, equipment preventive maintenance records and schedules
- Initiate and document appropriate corrective actions for any identified nonconformities in the lab, to ensure continued compliance with set quality standards
- Perform monthly comparability testing and data reviews between Kawolo Lab hub and other MUWRP supported laboratories in order to assess continued proficiency.
- Monitor/track and place orders for logistical requirements so that all laboratory supplies are on hand at all times.
- Support the Implementation of laboratory quality management systems in Kawolo Lab hub and lower level health facility labs supported by MUWRP.
- Participate in the collection of laboratory data, generate timely lab data reports and ensure the collected data is properly analysed and utilised for continued delivery of quality lab services.
- Participate in lab technical support activities, mentorship and quality assurance monitoring of other program areas that apply laboratory procedures, including HCT, PMTCT, EID, and SMC e.t.c
- Organize and participate in Trainings and continuing professional development sessions/ and CMEs to ensure continued professional growth.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Degree in a biomedical laboratory related field or its equivalent from a recognised institution
- Two years of working experience in busy Diagnostic/research laboratory environment.
- Evidence of prior training in the relevant techniques will be an added advantage.
- MUST be registered with Allied Health.
- Physical Ability: Ability to work for prolonged hours as may be dictated by the prevailing work load
- Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate.
- The incumbent is also expected be able to sit/ stand for extended periods of time.
