Fresher Psychologist Research Assistant NGO Jobs – Medical Research Council (MRC) UK / UVRI

Job Title:       Psychologist Research Assistant

Organization: Medical Research Council (MRC) UK / UVRI

Duty Station:  Entebbe, Uganda

Reports to: Head of Mental Health Section

Position Code: PRA719

About US:

The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time.

About the Study:

The Mental Health Section of the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit is undertaking a pilot study to develop and validate a model for the integration of depression management in adult HIV care in the district of Mpigi. This project involves either assigning additional responsibilities to health workers or training a new cadre of health providers (community health workers) and deploying them to contribute to the mental health care of persons living with HIV. The activities of this study therefore involve either giving additional responsibilities to already serving health workers or giving new skills and responsibilities to a new cadre of health providers (community health workers). Studies undertaken elsewhere have noted that caring for other human beings undergoing suffering has been known to lead to psychological distress and at times secondary traumatisation. This phenomenon has variously been described as compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatisation, burnout or work related stress (WRS). If not attended to WRS can lead to reduced work performance due to poor concentration, loss of motivation, reduced job satisfaction, absenteeism and work conflict. Inattention to health worker mental wellbeing can have catastrophic consequences including suicide.  The Mental Health Section therefore plans to undertake a pilot study to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of studying work related stress among health workers and community health workers involved in the HIV+D formative study in Mpigi district. To undertake this study, the Mental Health Section will partner with the Human Resource Department of Makerere University Business School.
