Historical Background of Lua Teachers College
Lua Teachers’ College was formerly Lua Secondary School which was operated for quite a number of years with a challenge of having few students, the main cause being the policy of the government to establish community secondary schools. Lua Secondary School had been established targeting the community members of Ukonga and Gongolamboto divisions to be the primary customers. But about 100 meters from Lua Secondary School was built Ulongoni Secondary Schools. Since majority of customers could not manage to pay school fees charged by private schools, they could not bring their children at Lua Secondary School, as a result the school was receiving few students. The new education policy (2014) directs secondary education to be compulsory and for this case the CCM manifesto had an agenda of introducing free basic education. All these educational changes had an influence on the operation of Lua Secondary School. Based on this context the owners of the school resolved to change the school to be Lua Teachers’ College which was registered by NACTE in 2014 with registration number Reg/TLF/130.
The college was registered by NACTE to conduct teacher education courses at the level of certificate and diploma. It offers a diploma (NTA level 6) in primary education for in-service primary school teachers of which in the academic year 2016/17 there are 53 students. Also it offers Grade A course (for pre-service) of which in this academic year 2016/17 there are 17 students. Formerly the Grade A program was registered by NACTE as diploma in primary education for pre-service students but in early days of the academic year 2016/17 MOEST directed NACTE to change the program to be Technician certificate in primary education and yet in November 2016 the circular No.5 of 2015 of MOEST brought back Grade A.
We also have a new program of Early Childhood Development. Under this program we have introduced a long course and short course. We are due to conduct a one year certificate in pre-primary education and a six month course of child care and custodian.
The college is operated at its own premises which occupy about five acres .Currently there are six classrooms which can accommodate 300 students at a go. The college has conducive environments with learning infrastructures including laboratories (computer & digital, hard copies, physics, biology & chemistry) and enough toilets with adequate and reliable utilities. Also the college has play ground, students’ canteen and a shuttle for students.
With all these infrastructures the college compound remains with enough space for self studies of students and extensions of buildings in case of more increase of students.
