Assigning Letter Grades
1.The final results of all courses are recorded as letter grades. Each letter grade is assigned values in terms of points. These points are then used to compute the student’s GPA (Grade Point Average). The following chart shows the value assigned to each letter grade:
Letter Grade |
Percent Mark |
Points |
|
A |
80 |
– 100 |
5 |
B+ |
70 |

– 69.9 |

C |

D |

2.The pass mark for any course in a major in any School/Faculty is 50% or C equivalent to 2.0 points for undergraduate programs and 60% or B equivalents to 3.0 points for postgraduate programs.
5.0Computing Grade Point Average
1.A student’s examination and course work results are delivered in the form of semester Grade Point Average (GPA). A student’s GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of credit hours undertaken.

GPA Calculation: 63.0 / 15 = 4.20
Therefore, the GPA for the semester is 4.20
6.0Computing Cumulative Grade Point Average
a.Cumulative Grade Point Average [cGPA] is computed using the total number of credit hours completed and the total grade points earned for two or more semesters.
b.The cGPA required for graduation with a Diploma or a Bachelor’s Degree is 2.00 over all the required courses. The cGPA required for graduation with a Postgraduate Diploma or a Master’s Degree is 3.00.
c.If a student does not meet the above requirement; he or she will need to improve the cGPA by taking another semester of courses as assigned by the Head of Department.
d.When a student receives a D grade for a course, and then the student repeats the course; the CGPA is computed using both the original and the second attempt. Therefore, the credit hours for the course are counted twice with varied points.
e.The CGPA appears on the Student’s final transcript and can be used to classify the degree.
