About US:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a Public Limited Liability Company incorporated in March 2001 under the companies Act (Cap 110), the Laws of Uganda and in conformity with the Electricity Act, 199 UEGCL started operation on 1st April 2001 and is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda, with the head office located in Kampala. The mandate of UEGCL is to establish, acquire, maintain and operate electricity generation facilities as well as promote Research and Development in the Electricity generation sector while running the company on sound business principals.
Job Summary: The Legal Officer will provide legal advisory services to the Company and all its stakeholders.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Litigation
- Represent the Company in Court in legal matters.
- Undertake all activities relating to case management including but not limited to: drafting and review of court pleadings, preparation of witnesses, collection of evidence, research and preparation of legal opinions on the merits or demerits of a case and case file maintenance.
- Participate in Alternative Dispute Resolutions on behalf of the Company.
- Prepare bi monthly reports on the status of cases.
- Liaise with external Counsel on Court cases assigned to them.
- Conduct research on matters in court.
Advisory Services
- Conduct research and prepare comprehensive legal opinions tor the Legal Advisory Services Manager and Company Secretary.
- Render legal advice to the Contracts Committee, Evaluation Committee, Management Committee and /or and any other committee that may be set
- Render legal advice on the legal issues pertaining to compliance with the provisions of the laws affecting the company’s business.
- Prepare statutory instruments required.
- Attend to queries/complaints from Business Units and stakeholders.
- Conduct due legal diligence on all contracting parties and on intended transactions or investments by the company.
- Negotiate, draft or review contracts and agreements on behalf of the company, safeguarding the user department and the Company’s interests.
- Provide legal advice on and recommend appropriate contract terms or their implications during drafting, review or negotiations.
- Prepare and pursue registration of instruments or documents with appropriate authorities.
- Pursue land acquisition monitor running leases, property rates and ground rents and initiate renewal of leases.
- Provide secretarial services to management committees or any other committee as assigned by the Legal Manager and Company Secretary.
- Prepare and submit to the Legal Manager, weekly reports on matters handled.
- Perform any other assignments as and when assigned by the Legal Manager and Company Secretary.
Compliance
- Asses and advice on the relevance and impact of existing or new legislation or policy on the Company’s business.
- Conduct legal and regulatory compliance audits and report the same to the Compliance & Regulatory / Manager” for appropriate action.
- Maintain and regularly update the compliance matrix with new laws or
- Review policies formulated from time to time to ensure compliance with existing laws.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and bi annual compliance reports for the approval to the Compliance & Regulatory Manager and Company Secretary
- Conduct training of staff on any compliance issues that may arise from time to time
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold an Honors degree in Law from a recognized University
- Post graduate diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre
- Enrolled Advocate
- Valid Practicing Certificate
- At least three years of post-enrolment experience in legal practice in a busy law firm or reputable organization.
- Experience of involvement in construction and other projects transactions will be an added advantage

- Computer literate

- An excellent command of the English language
