About US:
The National Agricultural Research Organization was established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for publically funded agricultural research in Uganda. The organization is composed of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for its day-to-day operations with semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARI’s) including the National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI) under its policy guidance. The European Union (EU) identified the opportunity of the beef sector within its National Indicative Plan (NIP) for Uganda and agreed to fund a 5-year project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF), to support the development of the beef sector such that it could realize its full potential. The project is called “Developing a Market Orientated and Environmentally Sustainable Beef Meat Industry in Uganda” (MOBIP) and is financed under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF). NaLIRRI has been contracted to contribute to the project objectives through spearheading MOBIP’s activity under Lot 2 on Improving pasture (Rangeland) and water management in a climate-smart way. The tittle of the 3-year action is “Improving Competitiveness and Productivity of the Beet Sub-sector through Fostering Gender Responsive, Inclusive and Sustainable Rangeland, Agro-Forestry and Water Resources Management (RAWM – Beef). The proposed action will improve pasture by involving both small and large scale livestock producers in trainings on best practices (including sell of excess livestock to reduce overstocking and overgrazing, encourage diversification of economic activities, agro-ecology/conservation agriculture practices, etc.), controlling bush encroachment and promoting tree planting and woodlots as alternative livelihoods in heavily degraded/deforested areas. It will also promote integrated water management at local level, including contingency management and planning for extreme weather events affecting the availability of water for livestock, protecting watersheds and conserving and storing water through rainwater harvesting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Spearhead the development and implementation of the project’s communication E strategy
- Lead in development, review, refinement, synthesis and dissemination of knowledge and information packages including newsletters, reports, journal E articles, technical reports, posters and brochures that pertain to project operations
- Regularly update the project website with recent developments on the project
- Take lead in representing the project in different media or information/knowledge delivery platforms for enhanced project visibility
- Coordinate production of advertisements and dissemination of appropriate information, knowledge, technologies and innovations developed by the project
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or Mass Communication with a bias to Agricultural Development Communication.
- Experience of at least one year in mass communication with a reputable organization is desired
