The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) is the leading humanitarian organization in Uganda. Since its inception in 1939 as a small women’s emergency organization, URCS has developed over the years into a formidable well-respected humanitarian agency. In 1941, it became a branch of the British Red Cross. The URCS was recognised by an “Act of Parliament in 1964” and admitted as a member of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent in 1965.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support URCS in establishing and institutionalization of a research agenda
- Conduct Literature/ document reviews – bringing together academic and practitioner literature and experiences – are conducted on a range of thematic areas not limited to SRHR
- Support operationalization of MOUs developed between URCS and partners with a research component.
- Take lead in preparing executive summaries/briefing papers written for SRHR -related and policy research reports, and additional editorial support provided
- Develop Research communications products (reports, toolkits, etc.) coordinated from design through to publication
- Work with teams to deliver on grants application, proposal development with partner organizations, Partner National Societies and other Donors.
- Support staff and volunteers’ capacities to conduct action research as well as documenting outcomes and impacts of on-going or past research.
- To build, maintain and develop a strong network of contacts across all relevant media channels whilst responding to enquiries with speed and accuracy ensuring that each opportunity is fully maximized.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education Qualifications
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in a discipline with a research component especially in Public Health, Development Economics, SWASA, Information Technology, Statistics and or Monitoring and Evaluation or a related field from a reputable institution will be an added advantage;
- Post Graduate qualification in a discipline with a research component especially in Public Health, Development Economics or a related field from a reputable institution will be an added advantage.
- Essential Knowledge and Experience
- Minimum 2 years in the field of research practice and management;
- Familiarity with the broad issues and current debates in international development on SRHR and research in general.
Essential Skills
- High level of integrity
- A team player who enjoys pitching in when required
- Advanced web research skills, with experience of conducting literature reviews
- Understanding of how to bring together diverse evidence sources
- Good knowledge of digital communications tools and tactics including video, updating and maintaining web pages, blogger engagement, social networks, search and digital marketing
- Experience with research communications or similar, and awareness of good practice in research uptake
- Comfortable working with Twitter/ other social media, MS Office, SharePoint
- Attentive to detail, with good visual presentation skills
- Good organizational and administrative skills
- Ability to deal sensitively and discreetly with people and information
- Commitment to URCS values and principles.
