In the WCH strategy 2016 – 2025, WCH’s Research and Development department (R&D) is responsible for the rigorous development and evaluation of a holistic, multi-level and interconnected care system with interventions focused on child protection, education and psychosocial support and supportive approaches enabling accessibility and quality. WCH envisions to evolve towards a globally renowned and recognised expert organisation in the field of psychosocial well-being and resilience of children and youth affected by conflict, where the evidence-based interventions of the care system are vertically and horizontally scaled, implemented beyond WCH.
Project and research background
The intervention “TeamUp” is a psychosocial support intervention developed in 2016 in collaboration of War Child, Save The Children and UNICEF Netherlands, to address the psychosocial needs of refugee children, initially those children who fled to the Netherlands. TeamUp provides refugee children between the ages of 6 and 18 with a variety of structured movement-based activities, encompassing sports, games and body-movement activities, to promote themes such as dealing with anger, stress and interacting respectfully with peers. The movement-based activities are designed to provide children with emotional support and vital stability – aiming to improve both their resilience and psychosocial wellbeing. The intervention is implemented weekly by trained volunteer facilitators, in child friendly spaces and schools. Currently, the intervention is active in more than 25 asylum reception settings and 15 school classes across the Netherlands, and a practice-driven evaluation was conducted in 2018-2019.
