UDSM Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics
The department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics was established in the mid-sixties, offering courses in English, French and Linguistics. Kiswahili was added later and subsequently became an independent department in the early 1970s. In response to the falling standards of English language of students joining the university, the Communication Skills Unit was added to the department in 1978. Currently the Communication Skills Unit is no longer within the department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics. It became independent as Center for Communication Studies in 2013. The department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics is thus currently composed of English section, French section and Linguistics section.
The department offers the following degree programmes, B.A Language Studies (BALS), M.A. Linguistics and PhD. In addition the department offers French for Begginers (Evening classes) and English Language Proficiency Certification to candidates who need it in order to access institutions of learning abroad.
Bachelor of Arts in Linguistic
The Bachelor of Arts in Languages (BALS) is a three year programme that aims at preparing graduates with a wide range of skills and knowledge in languages and linguistics.Students registered for BALS study two languages chosen from English, French and Swahili or they may choose to study one language and a specialization in Linguistics.
What will you study?
According to the specialization a student chooses, it will cover advanced skills in both English and French, such as listening, reading, speaking and writing, English and French semantics, phonetics and phonology, English for business communication, English Rhetoric, Francophone literarure, functional French, translation and interpretation ( Kiswahili/ English/ French) development studies, linguistic structure, critical thinking and argumentation, sign language and Edition.
Career prospects
Graduate in BALS have access to a wide labour market, both in public and private sectors. In the public sector the programme open up opportunities in language teaching and training, coordination of language programmes,development of English as Second/ Foreign language content, computational linguistics, lexicography and dictionary compilation and government careers as such as information officers public liaison officers and cultural officer in ministries and government agencies. In the private sector the programme opens in technical writing, publishing, editing,consultancy and corporate communication.
Entry Requirements :Two principle passes in langauage subjects in ACSEE examinations.
Cut-off points: 5 points from 3 subjects.
Admission Capacity: 40 students
Duration: 3 years
M.A /PhD in Linguistics
Minimum Requirements.
Good and relevant bachelor degree/ Master degree.
French Evening Class for Beginners
The courses are designed to respect the academic timetable, then one stage covers 45 hours as the BA courses. 6 stages have been designed to cover the semesters of B.A students. Nevertheless, a certificate of attendence and qualification will be delivered by the University of Dar es Salaam at the end of each stage. Students who are not complete beginners should be allowed to register at the intermediate level ( French stage II or II ) after they satisfy a level test designed by the lecturers.English Language Proficiency Certificate :This is an English Proficiency Test of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics of the University of Dar es Salaam. It is not TOEFL or ELTS or GMATMode of Payment
