University of Namibia Microbiology
The inhabitants of Mother Earth are mostly microbes, and their activities are central to human wellbeing. Microbes do cause disease, but a properly working relationship between humans and microbes is essential for good health. Microbes can spoil food, but yet they are used in many forms for food production.
The Department of Microbiology wish to carry out high impact research on infectious diseases, learn how transmission, immunology and pathogenesis of microorganism impacts on the health of Namibians and beyond and to also train new leaders in the Medical Microbiology.
Currently our focus is on Hospital Acquired Infections, Antimicrobial resistances and Zoonosis. Some of the research in the department is also looking at effects of some of the local herbs on HIV. Our Department collaborates closely with Ministry of Health and Social Services and Namibia Institute of Pathology to advance high impact research in Microbiology.
Our world is changing ever more rapidly due to population growth, global warming, and emergence of new infectious diseases. Currently our department trains undergraduate students in Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology and Medical Entomology and postgraduate students in other department working in Microbiology and related areas.
