Caritas Switzerland has been engaged in Uganda since 1994. Its program targets vulnerable groups, namely youth (adolescent mothers, vulnerable girls, and young prisoners), women and extremely poor community members, with a regional focus particularly but not exclusively on the greater north of Uganda.
About the project:
Caritas Switzerland and its partners AFARD, Advance Afrika, and GWED-G are about to
implement the Action for Livelihood Enhancement in Northern Uganda (ALENU) in the districts of Zombo, Nebbi, Pakwach, Amuru, Omoro and Agago. The project is part of the Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU), a Government of Uganda programme supported by the European Union (EU) under the 11th EDF. The purpose of ALENU is,” To consolidate stability in Northern Uganda, eradicate poverty and under-nutrition and strengthen the foundations for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development” and its specific objective is, “To increase food security, improve maternal and child nutrition, and enhance household incomes through support to diversified food production and commercial agriculture and through improving household resilience (notably to climate change) and women empowerment.”
Job Summary: Purpose Developing and promoting community-based nutrition initiatives including micro nutrient supplementation & deworming, promotion of maternal and young child feeding practices, hygiene, sanitation, and childcare
In addition to increasing the use of effective family planning methods with the aim of decreasing the number of teenage pregnancies and increasing child spacing which address both nutrition and population growth issues.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development of project training/facilitation guides and reproduce IEC materials.
- Train VHTs and sub-county Health Workers on good nutrition practices, child health, family planning and WASH
- Coordinate and supervise planned VHT activities under the ALENU project
- Empower cultural and religious leaders to conduct community sensitization
- Sensitize targeted project beneficiaries at the household and community level on good nutrition practices, with a special focus on the most vulnerable groups (children 0-59 months, PLW, and adolescents).
- Conduct nutrition training through cooking demonstration as well as sensitization in the community, health facilities and in schools
- Organize household hygiene and sanitation campaigns
- Support nutrition governance activities
- Train VHTs on family planning and provision of community-based family planning services
- Conduct follow up trainings to pregnant and lactating mothers on balanced diet, food preparation and handling
- Build capacity of ALENU staff in management of nutrition, family planning and WASH activities
- Provide trainings/orientation/technical inputs to staff, community structure members, school management committee, school clubs on nutrition and hygiene practices
- Conduct annual couple’s conference on family planning and GBV
- Conduct community dialogues on family planning and GBV
- Conduct community dialogues for out-of-school adolescents on sexuality and family planning
- Advocate for adequate supplies of family planning commodities in the community and project catchment health facilities
- Promote adolescent friendly services at schools, and health centres
- Facilitate debating clubs and youth peer groups in public and private secondary schools
- Collaborate with faith-based medical bureaus for the promotion of natural family planning methods.
- Work with district, sub-county, health facilities and other health-implementing partners in planning and implementing the nutrition and health component of the project
- Conduct monitoring visits to targeted Farmer Groups (FG), households and schools
- Producemonthly,quarterly and annual progress report(s)
- Coordinate with nutrition partners for common messaging and promotion of nutrition sensitive programming
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Holder of degree in BSc Human Nutrition& Dietetics and Pubic Health
- At least two years’ work experience in nutrition, family planning and health programing and management, and nutrition survey and assessments
- Fluency in English and a relevant local (Alur, Jonam and Acholi) language
- Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay at the field
- Demonstrable ability at report writing
- Basic computer skill i.e. MS Office
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience in adult learning education
- Experience working on complex and high level donor projects
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- A valid motorcycle-riding permit is a must
