About Us:

ADD International fights for independence, equality and opportunity for disabled people living in poverty in Africa and Asia.  We work with local, regional and national groups run by and for persons with disabilities, known as Disabled People’s Organisations or DPOs. We work with people with all types of impairments in areas of extreme poverty, regardless of religious or ethnic background. Whether it is visual, hearing or mobility impairments, neurological conditions, intellectual disabilities, albinism or more, we believe it is not the impairment, but the barriers in society, that limit people from reaching their full potential.

Over the last few years ADD International has developed a clear organisational theory of change that captures our rights based approach. We have invested in a robust monitoring and evaluation system and are developing a learning culture across the organisation. We have documented good practice and are building on our extensive experience of building the capacity of Disabled People’s Organisations. We have played a key role in making sure the Sustainable Development Goals are inclusive of people with disabilities and are now working to make sure that they are effectively implemented at a national level.

Job Summary:  The Project Assistant will be tasked with ensuring effective implementation of  project activities; in close consultation with leaders of community disabled people’s organisations (DPOs), local government, and other stakeholders in the project area.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

Support the capacity building of disabled people’s organisations for effective implementation of the sustainable livelihood projects:

  • Actively participate in participatory capacity assessments for community based DPOs
  • Provide continuous training and mentoring to community based DPOs on identified gaps as part of Capacity Building
  • Maintain and ensure regular communication with community DPOs
  • Take part in the development of project annual and quarterly plans for the Sustainable Livelihoods project and contribute to development of the annual work plan for the respective DPO
  • Support the empowerment of Individual people with disabilities (PWDs) and their  households participating in the Sustainable Livelihoods for People with Disabilities project
  • Oversee the process of identification of PWD and beneficiary households and ensure the identification is in conformity with the defined and approved criteria
  • Work with community DPO to ensure multi-stakeholders’ consultations/involvement in the development of household’s livelihood enhancement plans.
  • Coordinate the implementation of PWD household livelihoods plans
  • Ensure that project beneficiaries give regular feedback and report problems to the head of the respective DPO
  • Implement approved action plans to improve child and vulnerable adult safeguarding practice for the sustainable livelihood project

Support Project Monitoring Learning and Evaluation:

  • Use the project specific MEL tools for gathering data and evidence which contributes to learning and accountability processes
  • Document lessons learned and good practices on sustainable livelihood projects for internal and external sharing and applicationwithin ADD International’s current and future projects
  • Participate in project quarterly reflection meetings
  • Compile and submit detailed activity reports
  • Actively participate in joint learning forums for ADD International staff, partner organizations and other stakeholders for regular exchange of information, reflect on practice and methodologies.

Participate in project networking and collaboration:

  • Conduct stakeholder mapping in the specific project locations as the basis of networking, collaboration, influencing and securing external support to the project.
  • Represent the sustainable livelihoods project in field based engagements with government institutions and civil society networks
  • Engage with mainstream NGOs implementing livelihood programmes for disability inclusion purposes
  • Participate in campaigns to reduce stigma, change social norms and increase public awareness of the rights, needs and potential of PWD.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicants for the ADD International Project Assistant jobs should preferably hold Degrees in Humanities, Social Sciences, Community or Development studies from recogniseduniversities/institutes, and for PWD, equivalent demonstrated knowledge and experience (specialism in one of ADD’s programme area is an added advantage)
  • Show commitment to and understanding of gender sensitivity in programmes, including of issues related to violence against women and girls
  • Familiar with capacity building processes
  • Previous experience in promotion of human rights of vulnerable people
  • Demonstrated experience of networking and collaboration with civil society and government at district and community level
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to document and communicate in English
  • Proven interpersonal and networking skills to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Personal integrity and an ethical approach to work
  • Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the issues facing persons with disabilities in Uganda and/or a lived experience of disability
