About US:

The Law Development Centre (LDC) has a mandate to provide legal education to lawyers and non-lawyers, undertake research in topical legal issues, contribute to legal reform, produce legal publications, teaching materials, law reports and also provide community legal services.

Job Summary: The Deputy Head- Post Graduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid will deputise the Head- Postgraduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid in providing academic leadership for staff within the department. The incumbent will actively contribute to the strategic development and implementation of the departmental vision, policies and procedures. The jobholder will also supervise the Heads of Subject in the department.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  •  To participate in the process of timetabling and allocating subjects to Lecturers.
  • To assist in the development, review and update of curricula.
  • To assist in the preparation of teaching materials, teaching and student assessments.
  • Assist the head of department in the evaluation and review of the syllabi and programmes.
  • To co-ordinate clerkship programmes.
  • To teach, set and mark examinations in accordance with the syllabus.
  •  To participate in the development of research, consultancy, and scholarly activities to enhance the academic reputation of the department, and, contribute to the personal development of academic staff.
  • Supervise and assess the performance of Heads of Subject in the department
  • Actively contribute to the development of research, knowledge exchange and/or income generating activities within the department.
  • Significantly contribute to the development and implementation of departmental work plans and budgets.
  • Prepare quarterly performance reports and other relevant reports and submit to Head, Postgraduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Department.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the Deputy Head- Post Graduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid job must hold a Bachelor of Law- LLB (Hon) degree from a recognized University.
  • Possession of a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre.
  • Master of Law-LLM or Master of Business Administration or Master of Education Management from a recognized University.
  • Must be an enrolled member of the Uganda Bar
  • Previous experience in Administration or Management at a senior level shall be an asset.
  • Broad knowledge of curriculum management at an institution of higher learning will be an added advantage.
  • Broad knowledge of supervising and coordinating academic programs.
  • At least six (6) years’ work experience in private or public legal practice.
  •  At least six (6) years’ work experience teaching law in an institution of higher learning, three (3) of which should have been as a head of subject or equivalent level.
  • He/she should be a strategic planner.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and management skills.
  • Highly creative and innovative.
  • Ability to initiate and facilitate change management.
  • He/she should be a person of high integrity.
  •  Ability to produce quality results.
  •  Effective communication skills.
  •  He/she should be a team player
  • Good reporting and writing skills.
