About US:
The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) was established by the Animal Breeding Act, 2001. It is one of the statutory semi-autonomous bodies of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF). Formation of NAGRC &DB was part of the fulfilment of the aspirations in the National Animal Breeding Policy (1997), document and the Action Plan for its implementation providing guidelines to all actors in the animal breeding and production value-chain. The actors included input suppliers, farmers, companies, researchers, extension workers and civic leaders on suitable breeds for the various ecological and production systems.
Job Summary: To manage the production and mul-tiplication of animals using the most appropriate and acceptable production technologies and techniques to enhance the animal quality and multiply its numbers
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans, budgets, designs and oversees implementation of livestock production programs and projects.
- Participates in the update and maintenance of the livestock numbers at the centre farms.
- Coordinates the development of guidelines and implementation of field oriented production extension services for field workers, livestock Societies/ Associations and indigenous farmers.
- Evaluates production parameters for all imported germplasm and live animals.
- Promotes livestock production programmes with the farmers in collaboration with breeding activities of Genetic Resources Centre farms.
- Monitors and evaluates the performance of livestock production activities.
- Develops research proposals and takes part in production of breeds, production environments and other related researchable areas.
- Oversees the production or procurement of equipment, machinery and infrastructure for animal production activities.
- Establishes a foundation stock of superior dams and sires for multiplication.
- Manages the rearing of various categories of livestock for production of commercial stocks
- Coordinates the promotion of livestock records and identification on Centre farms.
- Initiates and designs project and programs for the formulation of management and production information to be packaged and used in the training programs of NAGRC & DB at different levels.
- Liaises with other genetic resource breeding and research centres to benchmark and improve on production technologies and services of the Centre.
- Supervises mentors and appraises staff in the Department.
- Undertakes any other assignment by the Executive Director and the Board
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate should have a PhD degree in Animal Sciences, Veterinary Science or their equivalent from a recognized degree awarding institution.
- Specialized post-graduate training in animal production from a recognized institution.
- Working experience of at least ten (10) years in animal industry is a prerequisite with at least three years’ experience at senior level in Government or recognized institution.
