About US:

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

Job Summary:  Under the overall guidance of the Assistant Public Health Officer in charge of the Urban, the Public Health intern, will support implementing and operational partner agencies health activities in Kampala among the urban refugees. H/she plays a key role in supporting planning, organising, implementing, monitoring and evaluation UNHCR’s public health programmes for all persons of concern in Kampala.  This will include regular visits to the urban refugees in order to monitor and support the implementation of health activities to refugees; monitor refugee access to health services and the impact on the national systems in Kampala, ensure feedback relating to key public health data is provided by health partners, relevant UN agencies, Ministry of Health at local level.  Work with other sectors (WASH, protection, community services, programme, etc.) to ensure a multi-sectoral approach.  This position is the main liaison with the urban refugee partners involves attending district health team meetings, refugee health coordination meeting with District Health Offices on a regular basis to ensure health services are integrated

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Support undertaking of the needs and resources assessments in coordination with Government and partners in order to prioritise needs and activities in the provision of services to refugees and other persons of concern to UNHCR.
  • Support and participate in the review and analysis of relevant project proposals and budgetary submissions presented by UNHCR partners within the context of the UNHCR programming cycle.
  • Support to apply various mechanisms and tools to ensure proper monitoring of the programmes.
  • Support co-ordination of health, nutrition, reproductive health and HIV activities and ensure that decisions are implemented as agreed upon.
  • Support information sharing on all aspects related to refugee health, nutrition, reproductive health and HIV to refugees in Kampala

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Public Health Intern job placement should hold a University degree or Diploma in Medicine or Nursing or related fields or clinical background.
  • Fully competent and experienced in the use of computers using a Word, Excel, Email, PowerPoint Presentations.

Desirable Qualifications & Competencies

  • Experience in infectious diseases/tropical medicine/community medicine/other relevant skills.

  • Practical working experience in refugee settings.
  • Experience in working in complex emergencies.
  • Specialist qualifications in public health
