AKF was established by His Highness the Aga Khan in the Switzerland in 1967 and AKF work in East Africa started in 1974, in Uganda, AKF operates a multi-sectoral portfolio that includes I programming in Education, Economic Inclusion, Civil Society, Health and Early Childhood Development predominantly in the Central and West Nile Regions.
Job Summary: The Teaching and Learning Specialist is a senior member of AKF‘s growing portfolio in the West Nile region of Uganda. She/he will be responsible for promoting AKF teacher support and professional development to ensure all portfolio interventions integrate well informed strategies for enabling schools and other learning institutions facilitate accelerated improved learning outcomes among children.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Implementation
- Steer the cooperation of best practices of teacher professional development in Project implementation Planning (PIP) processes
- Act as core facilitator or for ongoing teacher training activities
- Support capacity building of ECD trainers
- Works with other specialists to introduce Human Centered Designs (HCD) for addressing pedagogical and school environment challenges to teachers and other school leaders.
- Develops workplans and budgets for implementation
- Ensures that teachers benefiting from AKF programs adequately use developed instructional materials as part of their teaching and assessment for pupils/students
- Organizes and facilitates various network activities for clustered
- teachers and school leaders including peer learning exchanges for teachers and line local government/national level officials
- Promotes and facilitates introductory of Value Based Education (VBE) for teachers, school leaders and the surrounding communities
- Support both the Program Manager and MERL&M&E team in data collection, analysis and dissemination for sharing teaching and learning improvements arising from AKF initiatives
Technical Leadership
- informs identification of evidence-based teacher professional development initiatives for teachers self-awareness, relationship building skills, and pedagogical use
- Ensures teacher development activities/strategies are aligned to MoEs policies and guidelines
- Supports teachers to adapt gender and social inclusion best practices l including child and community safeguarding
- Promote AKF national and global teaching/learning innovations including Teach Like a Champion and Lead Like a Champion models
- Ensures teacher support activities are aligned to current COVID 19 mitigation realities
- Supports teachers to work with local language boards and consultants to develop relevant gender sensitive instructional materials
- Supports Program Manager to document key lessons learnt for influencing Quality Education Communities of Learning of what is emerging from AKF teacher development work
Partnerships and Collaborations
- Participates in district organized activities related to promoting teaching and learning improvement
- At times, the Programme Specialist i will be required to fulfil additional functions related to AKF Uganda’s programming as directed by the Program Manager.
- Represent AKF at project leadership meetings projects Compliance
- Ensures all workplans, implementation of teacher support activities and reports are of high quality and submitted to the Program Manager in time
- Ensure high quality data for teacher support activities is provided to M&E for reviewing progress
- Supports data management system adaptation for integrating ICT in teaching and learning.
- Conduct project site visits to validate project quality
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a recognised degree in of education, Teacher training or similar studies.
- At least seven years of relevant experience oi undertaking teaching, learning and other pedagogy improvement initiatives
- Previous classroom teaching experience for primary or secondary schools and teacher training
- Experience of developing TOT models and providing follow up support for teachers to deliver better teaching and learning practices.
- Proven experience of implementing programs that combine both gender and education improvement activities
- Ability to mobilize and work well with key stakeholders to conduct activity planning, implementation, data collection and disseminate documented findings to engage policy makers.
- Knowledge of West Nile local languages preferred
- Experience of working in Multi-cultural and diverse teams.
