Job Summary: The Senior Legal Officer will be responsible for handling litigation cases, either when the Company is sued or the Company is seeking legal redress; and for carrying out the day to day legal duties that require the experience and expertise of a legal officer at senior level.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning and organizing for the provision of legal and company secretarial services
- Participate in the formulation of work plans, budgets and strategies for the provision of legal services
- Determine periodic performance targets for him/herself, and agree on them with the Manager Legal
Providing legal services
- Draft pleadings, correspondences, prepare reports and proof read documents assigned by the Legal Manager.
- Review pleadings, correspondences and reports prepared by the Legal Officer.
- Draft agreements, contracts and other legal documents as assigned.
- Review agreements, contracts and other legal documents prepared by the Legal Officer.
- Participate in policy development and review, ensuring proper use of legal terminology, spelling, business English and grammar and ensuring compliance with applicable codes, legal and statutory requirements.
- Prepare plaints, court documents, and other related documents.
- Participate in handling litigation matters and where necessary liaise with external lawyers
- Carry out legal research and review progress of ongoing cases.
- Participate in handling matters of subrogation in liaison with claims staff and other stake holders, and give the financial implications.
- Monitor changes in the relevant legislation and regulatory environment and give timely information to SWICO management team on the same.
- Conduct claims investigations and advise the Claims Department accordingly.
- Provide legal opinion/ counsel when requested.
Ensuring Legal and Statutory Compliance
- Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise management accordingly.
- Contribute to the provision of documentation and information for compliance purposes.
Contributing to Institutional Development
- Provide technical guidance and support to the Legal Officer as necessary.
- Periodically assess own capacity development needs and propose appropriate programs to address the identified needs.
- Participate in the coaching and on-the-job training of new staff in the Legal Department.
- Attend and actively participate in periodic meetings of the Legal Department, and take actions arising from the meetings, as assigned.
- Contribute to the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports for departmental meetings and management meetings.
- Take minutes at meetings whenever delegated by the Manager Legal.
- Take charge of the preparation and registration of legal documents like tenancy agreements, statutory declarations, affidavits, memorandum of understandings among others.
- Represent the Company in legal matters as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must at least hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Law with a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
- Practicing Certificate by the High Court.
- A minimum of four years of progressive work experience in Legal Practice in an insurance sector (an added advantage)
- Experience in handling litigations or court cases
