About US:

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) received funding from the European Commission through the Horizon2020 research and innovation action to conduct an
implementation science study to enhance cardiovascular disease prevention in Mukono and Buikwe districts in Uganda. The evaluation follows a stepped wedge design to measure effectiveness and implementation outcomes. MakSPH seeks to hire candidates for field-based research assistants (duration: 1 month) in 20 selected parishes in Mukono and Buikwe districts.

 

About the project:

Makerere University School of Public Health, has received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to implement a project on Campaign worker digital payment evidence building. The project will establish a center for digital health and innovation whose activities will be anchored at Makerere University, Uganda and University of Dakar, Senegal to catalyze the creation of evidence on digitized payments of health workers of immunization programs/campaigns in selected Anglophone and Francophone countries. This project aims to enhance and inform national, regional and global efforts to digitize payments for health workers by fostering and supporting evidence- based and evidence-driven decision making in Sub Saharan Africa. The project will seek to recruit the following personnel to support the implementation of its activities.

 

Reporting relations: The Senior Research Associate – Technical Officer will directly work under the overall supervision of the Makerere University Hub Director and the Centre Director.

 

Job Summary: The Senior Research Associate – Technical Officer will be responsible for the overall coordination of the Hub and center scientific activities. The Technical Officer should be able to contribute to the growth of the center and grow into it.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overall coordination of the day-to-day scientific activities of the Centre to work with the Centre coordinator to ensure that the Centre is set up and gets institionalised, and that all Centre activities are implemented, and goals achieved to the highest standard
  • Ensure excellent coordination of scientific outputs between the Makerere University hub and the Dakar, Senegal hub, and other collaborating scientists in Africa and beyond.
  • Coordination, designing, developing and implementation of project research activities
  • Support the Hub Director in coordinating sub-grantee research activities.
  • Write and submit at least 4-5 high quality manuscripts per year Effectively implement the center vision, supervise personnel and guide office operations
  • Contribute to the growth of the center
  • Build and grow his career in digital health and innovations
  • Participate in teaching and supervising students.
  • Any other appropriate project/ Centre or MakSPH duties
  • Write grants and respond to calls/RFPs
  • Draw schedules for researchers to conduct country field support activities
  • Liaise with research teams and partners in all supported countries
  • Maintain close communication with implementation partners, research teams and collaborators
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of a community of practice, workshops, capacity building webinars, consultative meetings and other participatory activities
  • Coordinate request for proposals, selection and awarding of sub grants
  • Ensuring completion of all planned project activities
  • Track progress against targets and documenting the project progress
  • Preparing and submitting progress reports to the Hub director/center director
  • Participate in project dissemination activities
  • Participate in project meetings
  • Oversee data management, analysis and publication of manuscripts
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by the Hub director or Center director

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Suitable applicants MUST possess a PhD in public health or related fields. In addition, he/she should have a relevant first degree such as Bachelors in Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery, Social Sciences or any other health related relevant field including Digital Health/Finance; and a Master’s degree in Public Health or Health services research.
  • At least five years of experience in coordination of multiple research/project teams and sites, or health related projects or programs that are multi-country in nature.
  • Must have published at least one paper as a first author in a peer reviewed Journal
  • Experience in working with international partners is essential.
  • Experience in working in digital health, digital payments, and immunization campaigns is an added advantage
  • In addition, the applicant MUST be familiar with computer-based data analysis using quantitative data analysis packages such as EpiInfo, SPSS, STATA or SAS; and qualitative analysis software such as ATLAS.ti, or Dedoose, among others.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated experience with managing data, information, and monitoring and evaluation of health programs at sub-national and national levels.
  • Previous work experience or collaboration in a donor-funded project is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently, strong interpersonal communication and ability to work with diverse teams as well as meeting deadlines are necessary qualities.
