The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary: The Nursing Officer will undertake the consenting, active screening, recruitment, vaccination and follow-up care of adult men and women recruited into the PrEPVacc trial according to the study standard operating procedures and protocol. The nursing officer will also contribute to data collection, quality control and assurance, entry and responding to queries raised by the data team. In addition, he/she will provide care for study participants in case they come in for sick visits. He/she will provide additional study visits and vaccine schedules adherence counseling, contraception counselling, phlebotomy and dispensing of investigational product during the study.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- To provide study information, health education and obtain informed written consent from study participants;
- To screen participants for study eligibility;
- To administer and record research related interviews, questionnaires and/or checklists;
- To ensure optimal recruitment and retention of study participants;
- To support clinicians in the measuring of vitals;
- To provide nursing care to participants following study guidelines;
- To administer vaccines to the study participants as per protocol;
- To collect samples from patients/study participants as appropriate;
- To provide technical guidance and health education during study visits;
- To participate in training and organising site meetings;
- To track and order supplies/consumables;
- To ensure accurate record of data;
- To communicate any adverse events to the study investigators in a timely manner;
- Perform any other duty assigned by the PI or the Study Coordinator; and,
- Ensure participant transport refunds and allowances are disbursed appropriately.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Diploma in nursing and midwifery field from a recognised institution;
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing & Midwifery is an added advantage;
- At least one year of experience in clinical research setting;
- Possession of formal training in ICH-GCP is desired;
- Experience in immunisation;
- Experience in paediatric care;
- Experience of paper or electronic data collection and entry;
- Knowledge of research study protocols and practices;
- Registered Nursing Officer with active current license of The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council; and,
- Good computer skills.
