MAK Prof. Nawangwe urges staff on Professionalism

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has appealed to Makerere University staff to be principled and result oriented.

Prof. Nawangwe was on Thursday (13th July, 2017) speaking to a congregation at Makerere University Guest House during the farewell party of Mrs. Mary K. Tizikara, the former Director Human Resources.

“Public servants need to be principled, exemplary and should not be compromised by unprincipled people. They should remain professional and objective during their time of service,” Prof. Nawangwe said.

Citing Mrs. Tizikara as a best example, Prof. Nawangwe asked the members of staff at the Directorate of Human Resources to emulate her hardworking nature, objectivity and professionalism.

“She has guided The Makerere University Appointments Board very well through different Chair persons, given advice that has helped the Board to remain objective and professional in the decisions they have taken,” Prof. Nawangwe remarked.

Amidst applause from the audience comprising Members of University Management, College Principals, Staff from the Directorate of Human Resources and other invited guests, Prof. Nawangwe presented a Certificate of Service to Mrs. Mary K. Tizikara in recognition of her dedicated service as Director Human Resources (May 2012-June 2017). The Certificate of Service was signed by the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu.

The Guest of Honour, Mrs. Tizikara said: “I have been able to serve selflessly. I am glad that I have completed my term of service. When there are opportunities, please take them up and compete for better opportunities.”

Mrs. Tizikara thanked God for enabling her to successfully complete her tenure. She expressed her sincere gratitude to the staff in the Directorate of Human Resources for the cordial relationship and teamwork.

The Acting Director Human Resources, Mrs. Dorothy Sennoga-Zake commended Mrs. Tizikara for the leadership role that resulted in the drafting of the Makerere University Human Resource Manual, expansion of the HR function through supporting the recruitment of Human Resource Managers as well as College Human Resource Officers; and spearheading capacity building trainings that enabled staff in the Directorate to accumulate a wealth of experience.

Cognizant that Mrs. Tizikara is a Chartered Human Resource Specialist, Mrs. Sennoga-Zake said Mrs. Tizikira is a key resource in the human resource domain, and hoped that the team in the Directorate will continue to tap into her vast knowledge.

Giving a vote of thanks, the Labour and Welfare Officer-Ms Janet Nabukeera applauded the staff in the Directorate of Human Resources for according her utmost cooperation during the coordination of the farewell party. She then invited the Guest of Honour, Mrs. Mary K. Tizikara, Special guests, Members of Management, College Principals present, staff, friends and well wishers to a sumptuous dinner prepared by Makerere University Guest House.
