African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious and non-profit making organization with the main aim of protecting and seeking durable solutions for Refugees and IDPs in Africa in partnership with UNHCR the UN refugee agency.
Job Summary: The Senior Communications Officer will design and implement communication protocols around brand development, strategic change management communications, and production of communications materials. You’ll use your experience in project management to execute a number of activities from start to finish while collaborating both vertically and laterally across countries and teams. You’ll bring in your big-picture, creative thinking to pilot new ideas and implement new strategies. Of importance, you’ll tap into your mature emotional intelligence to serve as a natural connector within the organization.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary manager for a portfolio of strategic communications programs, managing and developing content that supports AIRD’s strategy across all external channels;
- Develop and execute communications plans, strategies, and tactics to include setting a protocol for AIRD’S branding and external communication, for web content, social media and print media;
- Work closely with the Director of Communications and Development, as well as internal colleagues to edit drafts, write and proofread content that inspires, educates and informs internal and external audiences and stakeholders in support of AIRD’s mission
- Be the driver of a new internal communication strategy
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, or related field
- Four years of experience in strategic communications roles developing and executing strategic communications plans, utilizing interpersonal skills to work with multiple internal and external stakeholders, managing agencies, and creating content that educates and inspires readers
- Ability to train
- Excellent communication skills: Both oral and written communication and language skills are essential for this role.
- Ability to quickly and accurately understand. A good demonstration of the ability to grasp the nuances of AIRD’s business, culture, objectives and people accurately and thoroughly.
- Effective leadership, execution and crisis communication skills: Have ability to lead and set direction in communications, and yet collaborate with different levels of people. Able to solicit ideas from different team players to be benefit of a cause.
- Innovative , dynamic and flexible with a creative mind to come with innovative ideas, strategies and thinking out-of-the-box in alignment with the communication objectives and business environment.
- Collaboration with staff of all levels essential, particularly in supporting leaders in different contexts outwork the strategy. Able to build trusted relationships with staff of all backgrounds.
- Management skills: Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and ensure that the quality of output is maintained. An organised thinker with good self management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with program management stakeholders and strategic communications programs strongly preferred
- Ability to communicate in French – verbally and non-verbally
