About US:
Energising Development (EnDev) is a global multi-donor partnership implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) that facilitates access to modern energy services in 25 countries worldwide. In Uganda, EnDev, under the Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP) cooperates closely with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD).
In its solar component EnDev Uganda aims at growing the market for off-grid solar PV systems for SMEs (Productive Use PU) and social institutions (SI) through results-based business development support for solar distributors as well as capacity building for distributors and end users. EnDev Uganda’s interventions strengthen the expansion of distribution networks, marketing outreach, service and product quality, as well as awareness and knowledge among the targeted users. Possible solar-powered solutions include electrical appliances such as energy-efficient ICT, cooling, irrigation, agro-processing, electric mobility and other power tools.
To implement its solar market development activities and increase access to off-grid solar PV solutions for SMEs and institutions, EnDev Uganda is looking for a skilled and experienced Solar Energy Expert
Job Summary: The Solar Energy Expert is responsible for;
- Support to the design, implementation and monitoring of solar PU and SI project activities.
- Regular interaction and coordination with MEMD, sector institutions and implementation partners.
- Assisting the supervisor in his technical and management tasks.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Solar Market Development
- Support to the further development of EnDev Uganda’s off-grid solar PV PU and SI market development approach as well as concrete interventions through his/her solar technical and business expertise
- Communication and engagement with implementation partners and relevant stakeholder through coordination meetings, field visits, trainings etc.
- Management of partner and consultancy contracts incl. regular monitoring of activities and achievements and support to partner reporting
- Preparation and implementation of other activities such as promotions, exhibitions, workshops and field research
- Any other duties assigned and agreed to by GIZ
Knowledge management and M&E
- Regularly updates the head of project, the head of the solar component as well as EnDev team members on the progress of ongoing and planned solar related activities and key sector trends
- Compiles up to date project activity information and documents approaches and lessons learnt as factsheets, papers and presentations.
Other duties/additional tasks
- Performs other duties and tasks at the request by the Head of Country Project.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, industrial engineering or business and engineering with a focus on solar off-grid PV energy
- Relevant training and postgraduate qualifications are an added advantage
- At least five years of professional working experience in the energy sector, including at least 2 years of active engagement with the private sector.
- Experience in the technical design, profitability analysis and costing, as well as implementation and monitoring of off-grid solar PV PU and SI solutions.
- Comprehensive understanding of the Ugandan and/or East-African off-grid Solar PV sector and its PU and SI trends.
- Experience in working independently and result oriented.
- Experience in consultant and stakeholder coordination
- Experience in project and contract management incl. steering multiple tasks under tight deadlines
- Prior working experience with GIZ is an added advantage
- Strong organisational and analytical skills and ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision.
- Good working knowledge of ICT (related software, phone, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office databases).
- High degree of self-motivation and team spirit in multi-cultural and inter-disciplinary team.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English language.
- Very good communication and presentation skills
- Very good practical and theoretical knowledge of data analysis and compilation
- Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed.
