UNEB PLE Results 2016 – 2017 | Uganda National Examinations Board
Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has withheld examination results of at least 1,886 candidates.
Addressing journalists at OPM offices in Kampala on Thursday, the UNEB chairperson, Prof Mary Okwakol said the results were withheld over examination malpractice.
She said a fake Primary Leaving Examination mathematicspaper circulated prior to the exams affected performance of 2016 candidates.
According to Prof Okwakol, non-Universal Primary Education(UPE) candidates performed better than UPE candidates.
“Kyankwanzi had highest absentees at 6.12 percent followed by Gomba, Kotido, Buvuma, Mityana, Mubende,” she said.
According to her, performance was better especially in English language and Social Studies. “Urban areas posted better results than rural pupils,” she added.
Prof Okwakol further noted that Division one had a total of 63,400 candidates while Division two had 251,787 of the 640,833 candidates who sat from 12,391 centres registered for 2016 PLE.
“Overall performance shows that male candidates performed better than females but females performed better in English,” she added.
Fort Portal Municipality, Entebbe, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Jinja, Kabale, Masaka, Mbarara, Lira, Masindi were best districts with 98 percent and above pass rate.
Serere, Namutumba, Bulambuli, Kyankwanzi, Iganga, Kaliro, Mayuge, Kween, Luuka, and Buyende were the worst performing districts.
Boys did better than girls with 541,089 (87percent) passing, compared to 517,889 (86.2percent) the previous year. More pupils qualify to join post primary institutions.
Speaking at the same occasion, the education minister Janet Museveni said senior one selection is set for January 24 and 25 at UMA, Lugogo.

2016 PLE: Boys beat girls, performance improves
KAMPALA – Uganda’s education and sports minister, First Lady Janet Museveni, on Thursday released the results of the 2016 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), which indicated improved general performance
This time round, failure reduced by 9.2%, with boys’ failure rate at 5.3% and that of girls at 7.7%.
She expressed her delight that more than 50% of the pupils who completed their primary education last year were female.
Minister Museveni said they had seen many young girls going to school, thereby reducing the cases of early marriages and teenage pregnancies.
UNEB chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakol had said earlier that from the results, male candidates had beaten their female counterparts.
There was marked improved performance especially in English, with girls performing better than boys.
In the past, poor handwriting has been the undoing for some candidates. But this time round, examiners reported that handwriting was more legible and candidates were more detailed in their answering of questions, with fuller sentences, it was revealed.
Minister Museveni said that since the introduction of the Universal Primary Education (UPE), PLE candidature had increased. However, urban schools performed better than rural schools in 2016, with non-UPE candidates shown to have performed better than their UPE counterparts.
Prof. Okwakol had also talked of more girls continuing to remain in school to the very end, an observation that would later be re-emphasized by the education minister.
In terms of distinction performance, English rose from 10% to 11.5%, Social Studies (SST) improved from 5.8% to 10.3% while Mathematics rose from 3.9% to 4.5%. Performance in Science, however, dropped by 7%.
1,886 candidates’ results withheld
Despite the improved performance, the spot of bother has been in the critically increased number of withheld results.
Last year, at the time of release, some results of 909 candidates were withheld over suspected examination malpractice. This time however, the statistic has more than doubled. UNEB has withheld results of 1,886 candidates pending investigation and hearing.
It was revealed that a fake Mathematics paper was circulated prior to the exams, which is said to have affected the performance. And because of such scenarios, the government, according to the Education minister Museveni, is in the process of amending the UNEB Act to provide for stricter penalties for perpetrators of malpractice.
She also urged parents, both in rural and urban areas, to provide meals for their children.
Behind the bars meanwhile, of the the 69 inmates who sat last year’s exams at Luzira Upper Prison, two passed with Division One, 32 in Division Two and three failed.
541,089 candidates qualified for post-primary education and with that in mind, Senior One selection will take place on January 24 and 25.
Now that the results have been officially released, schools should be able to access them on the UNEB portal, as UNEB executive secretary Daniel Nokrach Odongo had earlier said while delivering his pre-release remarks.
The results will be available on the exams body’s officially website and schools can collect them physically from the UNEB offices in Ntinda, Kampala.
