About US:

The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Global Health Security, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University- John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach.

About CDC Project: 

The Global Health Security Partner Engagement project with funding from U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is carrying out surveillance for Acute Febrile illness at different 4 surveillance sites; Mubende, Kabale, Arua and Jinja. The overall goal is identifying the leading causes of non-malarial acute febrile illnesses in multiple geographic regions of Uganda, the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial pathogens and building a sustainable laboratory and surveillance capacity with focus on vector- borne & zoonotic diseases.

Job Summary:  The Nurses will support in trialing patients, taking all the vitals and making sure all samples required are collected from the patient. They will ensure day to day running of the programme in the respective facilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in patient /health worker safety activities including environmental hygiene.
  • Participate in patient trialing/screening and admission and making sure all samples required are collected.
  • Carry out clinical observations confidently
  • Ensure patient charts/symptom logs are well filled.
  • Work with the hospital IPC committee to implement and monitor the project Infection Control strategy
  • Participate as a full member of the clinical team
  • Willingness to perform on call duties, shift duty and provide weekend cover as required by the project

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors in Nursing and midwifery
  • Full and up to date registration with the nursing and midwifery council
  • Recent clinical experience working in clinical care is desired.
  • Training on Infection Prevention and control will be an added advantage
  • Previous experience in medical research work
  • Understand client confidentiality and exhibits high level of ethical conduct
  • Good communication, organization and managerial skills
