Job Summary: The Appliance Technician will be assigned to the GSO Property section performing general appliances and equipment repairs at the warehouse, Chancery and leased residential properties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Incumbent performs repairs and maintenance of appliances and furnished residential/office equipment’s.
- Receives oral or written instructions concerning work to be done indicating the location and scope of work to be accomplished, coordinates with other supervisors as deemed necessary and proceeds to accomplish necessary appliance/ equipment repairs in accordance to acceptable trade practices and specifications.
- Performs highly skilled full journeyman level works in electrical works responsible for correct repair, maintenance, modifications and installation of appliances, equipment and associated accessories.
- Independently, identifies repair problems, takes corrective action in the repair and installation of appliance/office equipment.
- Repairs and maintains appliances such as clothes washer, dryer, freezer refrigerators vacuum cleaners, electric kettle and stove by changing power plugs, cords, fuses.
- Examines appliances for mechanical defects i.e. broken belts, castors, missing accessories/components prior to installation and replaces defective parts such as; power cords, plugs, fuses, burners, drive assemblies, ensuring all appliances/equipment are effectively earthed to US Mission safety requirements and specifications, does comprehensive appliances/equipment test before delivery.
- Must be cognizant and abide by embassy safety and health practices.
- Performs miscellaneous tasks and duties in support of GSO Property section operations i.e. incidental driving duties to transport appliances, equipment and furnishings to and from warehouse stores, work sites, offices and other locations as may be assigned by Property supervisor.
- Moves, loads and unload supplies, appliances and equipment to/from warehouse to offices and residential quarters.
- Assists with basic house furnishing in support of GSO warehouse men during busy house make ready schedules and also, skilled trades’ workers by carrying, holding, lifting, moving tools and materials.
- Uses hand trucks, forklifts, wheelbarrows, and simple hand tools required for warehouse operations.
- Advises Property supervisor on equipment procurement processes by providing technical guidance on the correct specifications, quality and type as requested in reference to rating, authenticity, and safety requirements.
- Assists with local BPA procurements of essential repair supplies, basic tools/equipment, maintains replacement parts supplies, tools and equipment in safe working condition including general housekeeping of shop, office work sites and warehouse storage areas.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

- The applicants for the United States US Embassy Appliance Technician job opportunity should have completed secondary school (O&A level) with vocational training or apprenticeship recognized as producing journeyman electrician skills
- A minimum of three years of journeyman electrician experience
- Must have full journeyman electrician knowledge of established practices and procedures of the electrical trade is required.
- Must have the ability to use all tools/equipment and professionally to determine extent of damage and experience to make necessary recommendations for equipment repair or replacement.
- Must hold valid Ugandan driver’s license. This may be tested.
- Language: Level II good working knowledge English in both spoken and written and knowledge in commonly spoken languages like Luganda, Kiswahili or Lusoga is required. This may be tested.
